In the EndA Story by AmandaThe death of trust is never overcome
“So this is it? After everything we’ve been through, this is how it all ends?” Her voice echoed off of the brick wall that circled the old playground. It was sandy and had a depraved look to it, long weedy grass poking through in patches. The swings and jungle gym that made up the abandoned park were weathered and rusted with age.
“I…I’m sorry,” His voice is just above a whisper. She turns her back to him, clenching her fist against the tears that were beginning to blur her vision. “I can’t believe this, I really can’t. You…you were the only person I trusted! You were my best f*****g friend!” By the end, her voice is raised, as well as her arms. She’d turned around and faced him again, big fat tears rolling down her cheeks. “I thought…I thought that you actually cared!” Tears were almost falling from his hazel eyes, as he began to shout back. “I did, I do! Don’t act like you’re the only person in my world! I couldn’t spend all my time with you!” “Don’t you get it?” her voice is a whisper again. Somewhere off in the distance thunder rumbles. She can’t even find it in herself to care. Thunder, lightning, rain, wind….her favorite things. “I haven’t spent time with you in ages! You ignore me at school, you rarely text back. You were the one person who I never used to be invisible to, but that changed. I’m sorry if it hurts me, okay?” She’s close to sobbing, really close actually. Her voice has a bitter edge that she can’t control, “I’m happy for you, I really am. I’m glad you have Cecelia, I’m glad you have other friends.” “Katrina…you could’ve told me…we can still…” He feels horrible, guilt crashes over him. “Don’t bother, Max.” She offers him a broken smile. With a start, he realizes that she’s never smiled at him like that before. That was the smile for everyone else but her best friend. Anger washes over him. “Why not? Kat, you were my best friend! So what if we haven’t been as close as normal? We can fix this! I should have been a better friend! I admit it! I’m sorry!” “‘I’m sorry’ won’t change a thing, Max. Believe me, things don’t change. We’ll never be able to be like we were.” “But…” he steps forward involuntarily. “You’ve already ended this. I’m already alone, you’re already free. What’s done is done.” She look at him with shining green eyes. Lighting and thunder strike, wind whipping her chestnut hair around her face. “After everything we’ve been through, this is how it ends,” she echoes in a whisper, looking off into the distance. © 2012 AmandaAuthor's Note
