Mindless Insanity

Mindless Insanity

A Story by Amanda
"

The last survivor of Pinecrest Falls POV. All that's left for Cara is darkness before she will succumb to monsters of the mind.

"
Run. Run. Run.

That one steady thought pounded through Cara's head. Somewhere deep down she knew that no matter how far she ran, she'd never escape the horrors of this place. Still, her feet made a soft thumping sound as they hit the damp pavement. Or maybe that was the sound of her heart as memories coursed through her.

Marie's face when she saw the letter.

Jason holding her.

The excitement that had run through the five of them on their way up here.

A high pitched wail broke her out of her thoughts, causing her to stumble. A sob escaped her lips as she lurched forward, delusions of black tentacles reaching for her and sunken faces of her friends pursuing her. They were all dead now, even Jason.

This old mining city, it had been so deliciously creepy when they'd arrived. The five thrived off of the mystery, contemplating each new curious item. They had been fools to cast those moans and creaks off as side affects to the oldness of the place. Fools.

It had started about twenty-one hours ago now. Marie wasn't in her bed, so they searched for her. One by one they'd been picked off, until it had been just the young couple left. The black things had gained from the screams of their dying friends.

Cara ducked behind a corner, trying to quiet her breathing. Looking around, she painfully realized that this was where her best friend, Marie, had died. Her blood was still spattered onto the wall across from Cara. One spike through the chest had taken her away.

Cara froze as she heard a soft slithering sound to her left. Oh please no, please dear god no, she prayed. Tears streaked down her face as she thought of what the end of those tentacles held. She kept her eyes on the road to her left, slowly inching towards the right. The sounds stopped and she breathed a sigh of relief.

Turning, she let out a shriek of pure terror. One of the things was grinning at her, four of its scaled tentacles hovering about it. They came together at what looked to be the things back. There was just enough light for her to make out the shape of its child-like body. It's glowing red eyes were only slits that seemed to watch her every move.

Suddenly it let loose a wail and pitched forward. Cara was shaking, and it felt like her chest would explode. Let it be quick, she thought wildly, don't draw it out.

Echoes of others sounded around her and she felt a sharp, burning pain in her stomach.    She slowly looked down to find a spike poking through her stomach; she'd ben stabbed from behind. Her eyes wide and lips locked in a scream, she turned to see the hollow eyes of her friend. It was a whole different feeling that coursed through her. Cara knew that at the base of their neck was a slim tentacle, seeming to draw energy from the corpse it was attached to.

The monster that had originally found her was suddenly on top of the girl, pushing her down. She screamed and thrashed until its mouth attached to her neck. Cara's first instinct was to fight harder, but the memories of her friends only let her tense.

The five of them had tried to fight, they really had. That had only worked for about six hours. All four of them had died gruesomely; their blood was splattered and spilled all over to prove it.

So Cara forced herself to think of Jason and just let go. When the monster pulled away, a large chunk of her neck gone and sinews hanging from its mouth, she only cried and screamed, remaining still. Please, let it be quicker. She was anxious to meet her friends once again.

"Yes, I'm here at Pinecrest Falls where it seems that five young adults were brutally killed. Officers say that upon further investigation, the deaths will most likely be ruled suicide. It seems that the victims were indeed victims of their own mind. Stay tuned to hear the full story at six. I'm Chad Winters, and this is Chanel 6 news. Back to you, Stephen."

This was amazing, i'm in love with it, I'm just slightly confused, was the whole thing an illusion? It was really suicide? Like did the black tentacle monster things represent depression? Or were the people just stupid and thinking someone could kill themselves my taking a chunk out of their own neck?
