Shades Of The Night

Shades Of The Night

A Story by Amanda
"

This was written for a contest. Description of my own personal super hero.

"

He’d been this way as long as he could remember. Maybe there was a time when he was normal, there must’ve been, because his parents look happy and loving in younger pictures. He wonders for a moment how they are, if they’re enjoying the child they’d only had to replace him.

Giving the darkness around him a pearly white smile, he almost laughs at the thought of his ‘brother’ turning out like him; a defect.

Oh, he’d traveled around the world (having the power of elements made that significantly easier), trying to find out what made his defection…well, his. He’d met a girl like him, when he was in California. She wasn’t the same as him, but they were close. Instead of controlling the weather and in turn, water, earth, and air, she was mental.

Telepathy, Telekinesis, and Superhuman tracking were all part of her package, made possible by Kinetic Absorption. Her telekinesis only went so far though, she couldn’t hear thoughts, but she could sense them. Together we’d found out about the kinetic energy thing.

That had been about eight months back though. By that time, he’d already been out on the streets for a year and a half. His parents had Benjy when he was fifteen. He’d only been able to take so much of that. Then they kicked him out right before his seventeenth birthday, saying he’d be able to live by himself and  they were sorry, but they need the room. He scoffed.

Dropping down from his place on a fire escape, he pulled his black hood father over his face, so the only thing visible was the stubble on his chin and everything between the bottom half of his nose. His low-slung, torn jeans and black vans made him look a bit intimidating, which was good. But he didn’t look like a hero, which was also good, because he’d never seen himself that way. Putting his hands in the pockets of the sweatshirt, he journeyed towards the lighter part of the alley.

As he emerged, a woman clutching her purse gave a scream of surprise. Turning towards him and holding out MACE threateningly, she hissed, “Who are you? What do you want? I’m armed!”

Pepper spray would not help against someone who controlled water and air. But he grinned anyway, his silver eyes brightening as storm clouds began to thunder in the distance. “I’m Nightshade, who are you?”
