Seeking A Friend

Seeking A Friend

A Story by Amanda
"

Things don't seem to stop changing in my life. So here's a little a story sorta kinda about changes. Holly, Matt, Marie

"

“She keeps calling,” Matt said softly, glancing at the phone next to Holly on the ledge.

“Let her,” she spat, glaring at the waves below. “People…they can’t just decide to care, if someone’s on the edge, then it’s already too late.”

“Holly…”

“What, Matt? You think I’m joking? Do you know how badly it hurts to be left alone? Do you know how let down people are because others can’t be bothered to care?” Holly whispered, her lower lip trembling. “When people…when….I trusted her, Matt. I thought…I thought she was there for me.”

“She wasn’t?” He asked, his legs swinging back forth over the sleek water below. Cars blurred by them, only a few noticing the two adolescents sitting on the edge of the bridge.

Holly looked at him, a few tears escaping her eyes. Her voice was broken and slightly detached as she spoke. “You know…I never really knew what Marie thought about me until I heard her talking about me behind my back.”

Matt looked at her, the frown that had been marring his features deepening. “What if that wasn’t what she really thought of you?”

Holly face was tearstained and almost defeated. She brandished a hand, “You’re here. She’s not.”

“Would you let her be here?” Matt asked, raising an eyebrow.

“If she wanted to be here, she would be. Trust me,” she answered, shaking her head.

“Marie is your best friend,” Matt said, turning to her. “You’ve been through a lot together and you figure that none of that was real?”

“That’s not what I’m saying…it’s just…things change…” She sighed, running a hand through her messy hair. “She’s changed, and really, that’s okay. But she pretended to be my friend, pretended that I could still trust her with my secrets. That’s what pushed me over the edge.”

Before Matt could speak, the phone began to vibrate again. He sighed and leaned over to grab it. Matt answered, his tone soft but stern. “Hello?”

“Matt? Matt, what are you doing with Holly’s phone?” Marie’s voice was shrill and it caused him to wince.

“What do you want, Marie?” He asked, sighing. Holly stayed silent beside him.

“I want to talk to my best friend!” She exclaimed, and he imagined her flailing her arms everywhere.

“Well, maybe you should have done that before she got tired of listening to your stories.”

“What? Matt, just put Holly on the phone. I want to talk to her.”

He sighed and held it out to Holly, not expecting her to take it. She did. “Hello?” she asked numbly.

“Holly! Where are you? Are you okay? Why haven’t you been answering?”

“Marie, where are you?” Holly asked, ignoring all of the questions.

“I…I’m at Felicity’s, why? You didn’t answer my questions!” Marie answered, panic still in her voice.

Matt gaped at the small smile that fought its way onto Holly’s lips. “That’s what I thought. Marie, have a nice life. I sincerely hope the best for you. I’m glad…I’m glad that you have other, better, friends.”

Holly had begun crying halfway through her tiny speech. But she still smiled. “I’m sorry…I’m sorry that I haven’t been the friend that you wanted. Goodbye,” she whispered the last word and sniffled.

“Holly…what…? What do you mean goodbye?” Marie asked, her voice rising again.

Matt grabbed the phone. “She’s saying goodbye, Marie. Holly is sitting on the edge of a bridge. I’m sitting here next to her, you do the math. Bye.”

He ended the call and placed the phone down. Holly began to sob and Matt put his arms around her. He pressed his lips to her forehead. “Please don’t cry, Holly. Please don’t end your life.”

“I…”

Matt began to sing softly,

“I scream into the night for you
Don't make it true, don't jump
The lights will not guide you through
They're deceiving you, don't jump

Don't let memories go of me and you
The world is down there out of view
Please, don't jump, don't jump

I don't know how long
I can hold you so strong
I don't know how long

Just take my hand
Give it a chance
Don't jump

I scream into the night for you
Don't make it true, don't jump
The lights will not guide you through
They're deceiving you, don't jump

Don't let memories go of me and you
The world is down there out of view
Please, don't jump, don't jump
And if all that can't hold you back
Then I'll jump for you…”

“Please don’t,” he whispered again. “I love you.”

She sniffled and looked up at him. Through her tears she sobbed, “I love you , too.”

Yeah, so maybe I got a teeny tiny part of this from Dinner For Schmucks. But everything else (except Don't Jump- by Tokio Hotel) is mine. I hoped you liked it
