Farewell's are never easy but closure is always needed for the parting pair to blossom again individually at some point in the future. To end with dignity is the greatest step one can take.
This one says so much in so few words. A fine write. Relevant for all of us.

Thank you for this amazing insight and interpreting it beautifully!
Your poem delivers a different surprise in each line. I love it when a poet takes an everyday idea & injects it with lively originality. Lines 1 & 2 make me think of different times in life when I've had a secret rendezvous -- wine cellar is such an adventurous place -- dark & cool -- I'm thinking "SEX"!! But then your poem surprises me, as it turns into a drinking spree! And then I'm surprised again by the "goodbye" in the last line. So many possibilities reel thru my mind -- why must they hide to say goodbye? Nice concise mystery (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

Because they're crazy....Kidding.
Thank you, my friend.
I hate goodbyes. Actually I hate proper goodbyes. So the fact that I love this poem has gotta say something, right? Or I'm just impressionable and can't hold on to my own opinions.
It's cool that you can be so impactful with just four lines. I do wonder about the lack of punctuation, but perhaps it's to further emphasis the ending period. If that's the case, I think it's genius.

Sometimes, in life, you've gotta make the hard choice even if it kills you.
Partings are always difficult, but closure is important. With closure you can move on. Without it you can be left in limbo. A short poem which says a great deal. Well done.
Is that how drunk we gotta be to bid proper goodbyes?
One would rather drown in the toxicity of wine and render himself numb than drown in the river of sorrow with our senses intact just before that ultimate farewell, I guess.
So much said in a few words. Beautiful writing.

The rhetorical question hits the bull's eye.
