Baking Disasters Help Your Heart

Baking Disasters Help Your Heart

A Chapter by ShootingMyStar

"Sab!" He yelled, trying to run towards me. "I'm sorry! Okay? I said I'm sorry!"

"That's not good enough!" I screamed back, yanking my hand out of his grasp. We were at the parking lot of the brand-new club called Club Electro. It just opened up at midnight three nights ago and I was here with my lust-driven boyfriend and friends. “You do this crap every single time. I’m sick of it! Done. Finished!”

“You don’t mean that Sab.” Cody said matter-of factly. He brought his light blue eyes up to meet mine and said, “Right?” I continued to stare at him with my arms crossed over my chest. “Please say right, Sab!” He pleaded. I shook my head and started to walk away.

"Sabrina!"

Ignoring him, I turned the corner and kept walking, quickly glancing over my shoulder to see if anyone was following me. A pair of bright headlights were now shining on the building in front of me; I turned to see a familiar shiny black Chevy Tahoe stop right next to me. "I don't care if you're mad at me. Actually I do care, I care a lot.-" I rolled my eyes and continued to walk further, hearing Cody's tires crunching on the gravel. "Rina, get in the car. You don't have to talk or listen. Just sit in the truck being mad and totally hate me and never forgive me. I just don't want you walking alone on these streets at midnight.” Reluctantly, I gave up and opened the passenger door, hoisting myself up and buckling my seatbelt.

“Drive to Lanie’s.” I ordered. Cody nodded his head, driving off toward the direction of one of my closest friend’s house.

After fifteen minutes of driving, Cody finally pulled into her driveway, leaning over the console. “Can I get a goodnight kiss?”

I glared at him for thinking that he can get away with what had happened in the club so easily. “No.” I said curtly, grabbing my purse and climbing out of the car.

“Sabrina! You will keep running back to me!” Cody yelled from the truck. I rolled my eyes and opened my purse, grabbing the key Lanie had given to me a while back, and stuck it in the keyhole turning the knob.

“Rina?” Mrs. Yuergans called out from the living room. “What’s wrong? It’s nearly past three in the morning.”

“Is Lanie here?” I asked, avoiding her questions.

Mrs. Yuergans got up from the chocolate brown leather recliner and stepped towards me. “I think I know what’s going on. I’ll yell for Lanie and you can just go up to my bedroom. We’re gonna have girls’ retreat.”

“Thanks Mrs. Yuergans.” I smiled faintly.

“Just call me Mom.” Mrs. Yuergans grinned and then up the stairs she called out, “LANIE! Rina’s here. Get down her pronto!”

I skipped up the stairs two by two and walked into the master bedroom, sitting down on the bed. I heard thumping coming from down the long, narrow hallway and Lanie appeared in the doorway. Her brand new Victoria Secret baby blue tank-top and matching shorts were on and her blonde hair pulled back in a messy bun.

“Rina!” Lanie ran from the door and threw herself on me, making us both fall back on the bed. Mrs. Yuergans--or Mom--came into the room with two white plastic bowls.

“Here’s the fruit salad bowl.” Mom began, holding up the white plastic bowl with her left arm. “And this is the facial mask one.” She said, holding up the right one. “Now sit down so we can get started while you tell us what happened this time.”

Me and Lanie got off the bed and sat on the floor, Mom crawled over in between us with the bowl of facial mask dip and stuck her left hand in the bowl, and withdrew, rubbing her palms together and putting the cold green stuff on her daughter’s face. “Now tell us what happened.” Lanie suggested.

I took a deep breath and began, “We were at that new Club Electro and it seemed like we were having an amazing time. Well I was I guess Cody wasn’t because after an hour of being there he started flirting with the bartender. I pulled him away from her and kept asking him why he was always flirting and you know what he did?” I asked, sitting on my elbows looking at both Mom and Lanie. They shook their heads and I continued, “He told me to shut the hell up and stop acting like such a drama queen, pulling the sluttiest girl in the whole club and shoved his tongue down her throat, grabbing her butt and just rubbing all over her. I don’t want to keep crawling back to him. It hurts so much, seeing him treat me like crap and I still go back to him.”

“Honey, maybe this is a sign.” Mom gently said. Lanie’s mom was all about being with your inner spirit and cleansing yourself. She was a huge meditation person--Pilates, yoga, you name it--and loved telling everyone about her faith. She was a real Christian woman.

“Like what?” I asked, my eyes beginning to water.

“Lanie told me everyone’s been trying to make you see how Cody’s treating you and you never believed them but today! Today you finally saw what he’s doing!” Mom exclaimed, shaking my shoulders.

“Maybe. But I still love him. How do I get over him?” I asked.

“There’s only one way to get over someone.” Mom grinned, standing up and grabbing the two plastic bowls.

“BAKING!” Lanie and I screamed simultaneously. Sometime between me explaining what was going with Cody and Mom shrieking about signs and faith, my golden retriever puppy, Biscuit came in and began barking immediately with happiness, licking all over my face.

It was maybe the third week of going out with Cody; we were walking along rough neighborhoods, when we heard barking and yelping. My animal loving instincts took over and I immediately ran over to the backyard of the abandoned house that was literally torn in half.

Once I got there, with Cody following me; I saw a baby pup that was so tiny it was about the size of a newborn kitten. The pup was white as white as snow but her tiny ears were golden yellow, just like a crispy biscuit from Popeyes or KFC. Cody grabbed the skinny pup from the scalding backyard patio and handed her to me, “For you. You were always begging for a rescue pup to love and cherish. It’s from me, every time you look into Biscuit’s eyes, remember I love you.”

I laughed. “You want to name her biscuit?”

Cody nodded fiercely and replied, “She reminds me of Popeyes and KFC.”

“That’s what I was thinking!” I laughed, rubbing my face on Biscuit’s rough, dirty fur.

“Let’s go!” Mom squealed delightfully, and I mentally thanked her for bringing me back to Earth. She ran out of the room, making loud thumping down the stairs. We followed her into the kitchen, where she was taking cookie dough and Tollhouse chocolate chip packet out of the refrigerator, setting it alongside the butter spray and pan.

“Cookies are going to help?” I asked, as Mom put the cookie dough in the blue plastic bowl, the ones you always see during the summertime in Wal-Mart.

“It worked for me when Lanie’s dad died.” Mom said, shrugging her shoulders a bit as she began mixing the dough. I glanced at Lanie.

Her shoulders were tense and tears were rolling down her cheeks. “Why did he have to die?” Lanie yelled; her mom kept on mixing the dough unfazed, “Why?”

I reached my hand into the bowl making Mom stop, I grabbed a glob of dough and threw it at Lanie. Dough was smeared across her face, when she opened her eyes, they were glaring at me. “What the hell?” Lanie shrieked.

“Language Lanie Jewel.” Her mom scolded. As cool as she was, she never let Lanie sly with everything. Like this one time in the sixth grade, Lanie and her first boyfriend Greg were making out on the couch, like seriously. You could tell that his tongue was dancing down her throat and they were French-kissing and everything. Lanie’s mom wasn’t an overprotective parent; she just told Greg that if she catches them making out on her couch again, she will call his mother. But now, if Lanie’s making out with someone, Mom will tell her it’s not Christian-like to kiss like your life depends on it unless you’re married. So Mom swore Lanie into only doing Christian Kisses with her boyfriends.

“Stop calling me by my horrid middle name!” Lanie grunted. Mom smirked and continued to mix. “Anyways, what the hell was that for?”

"Lanie Jewel Smith!" Mom shrieked, flicking dough at her daughter. Lanie ignored her and stared at me to continue.

“I’m the one supposed to be depressed here!” I exclaimed, throwing my hands in the air. “I just realized I’m whipped by my boyfriend! He’s the one that’s supposed to be whipped.”

Lanie grinned, throwing the whole flour bag in the air, letting it dump on me. “Whoops! I thought it was empty.” Biscuit came running from the living room and began licking the floor where the flour spilled.

“Oh yeah, that’s a real ‘whoops’” I muttered, throwing the eggs that were in the hot pink plastic bowl. “See! Mine was a ‘whoops’ too!”

Lanie reached into the fridge, opening the milk jug and throwing the liquid at me. I grabbed the blue plastic bowl from Mom’s grasp and threw the contents onto Lanie. Dropping the bowl from my hands, I launched myself at her, rubbing my hands all over her hair and making sure the dough is covering every inch of her head.

She reached her hands up to her chest grabbing about two egg yolks and rubbing it on my eyes. Biscuit launched herself on us, cleaning and licking our heads every few minutes. I swear it was like luxury to her.

“Okay!” Mom said cheerfully, “I guess we’re not making cookies.”

Lanie and I grinned sheepishly, saying, “Sorry!”

“It’s fine!” Mom chirped, “I’ll just call the maid guy that’s been hitting on me every time I go to Target to clean this up.” Lanie shrugged her shoulders and got up off the floor. I followed her back into her bedroom and we plopped down on her lavender king-sized bed after putting our pajamas on. I pulled the covers all the way to my chin and Lanie turned on the TV, MTV's True Life was on. It was an episode Lanie and I had already seen.

“Thanks for being there for me.” I muttered, tiredly. “I really appreciate it.”

“No problem Rina. Just promise me one thing.” Lanie said, boring her eyes into mine.

“Sure.” I replied, while yawning. “What is it?”

“Never take him back.” Lanie said quickly

“Okay.” I agreed. “I won’t.”

Lanie grinned hugely. “Great!”

“Night Lane.” I said, turning my back on her.

“Night Rina.” She replied, doing the same thing.

Tonight, after making that promise to Lanie. I want to change. I don’t want to constantly go back to Cody. He knows he has me wrapped around his finger, constantly buying me things just so I can stay with him. My life was fine without him as my boyfriend. He was my best friend since diapers. Our parents grew up knowing each other from middle school and we were lucky enough to become best friends. I think that was part of the reason why I always forgave him, because he was my best friend.

It was around eighth grade when his parents started cheating on each other and when Cody and I entered tenth grade was when Cody’s parents told him what was going on. They filed for divorce in the second semester of tenth grade, finalizing it the summer of junior year. At court, Cody was asked who he wanted to stay with. His carefree dad or his protective, gentle mother. He chose his dad and I liked to believe he chose his dad to stay with me but then I started realizing the real reason he was staying with his dad.

His dad was still cheating on women, using them like tissues for a cold. His dad was even givingCody tips on how to become the hottest playboy in our school.

It drove me insane, I didn’t talk to Cody for a whole week until he went into some vintage store and bought me a beautiful sapphire necklace that I've been droning about. It won me over and now, almost a year later, I’m still with him. But I won’t this time, he can buy me the world and I still wouldn’t let him back in my life. Never ever again. Never!
