Gliese 581c

Gliese 581c

A Poem by Stuart Ellis

Sombrero galaxies spiral
send rugged asteroids tumbling,
to plunder barren worlds,
and cut across bright cavities in ionised gas
as dense colossal swirling nebulae birthing stars
penetrate a thick black expanse.

Interstellar monsters roam infinity,
striking constellations
of globular clusters and raging furnaces,
spherical fusion reactions of brilliant
pervasive burning hot gas
and coronal mass ejection
blazing billions of light years away,
more than the minuscule grains of sand
in all the beaches, seabeds
and vast sun baked deserts
of our delicately balanced biosphere.

And thriving
amongst this celestial carnage
the prolific, resilient
and fearless explorer, mankind;
An abundance of bloodlust horror,
resplendent enigmatic wonder,
and a history of ravenous conquest
with unfettered awareness
of his volatile tendency,
a hairs breadth from self annihilation
and yet, this passionate burning desire
to seek out and invite
his distant neighbours,
the unknown tenants of the stars.
