Petko

A Poem by Stuart Ellis

Never a man more proud,
than the fearless Bulgarian colonel
who carried home his virgin bride
six kilometres just to prove his love
and spoke nothing of his pain.

Never a man more proud,

than this impassioned lion heart
who fought with spirit and honour,
his enduring courage renowned
and asked nothing in return.

Never a man more proud,
whos father was brutally murdered
by the corrupt communist government
he served so dutifully
and heard no reason why.

Never a man more proud,
than the one who tells his story:
The courage of a man
who gave blood, anguish and tears
and took nothing but his pride.
