First Solo

First Solo

A Poem by Stuart Ellis

Out steps instructor, door bolts firmly shut
Deserted now within this violent contraption
A cacophony of screaming blades and juddering metal
A beast stomping long grass flat in tempestuous blast
Frenzied and alive it seems, a raging vortex
Inside an anxious child, quivering and abandoned
The edge of panic and sick cold trickling dread
A multitude of dangers swirling at speed above my head
Terrors of catastrophic failure and my resulting death
The child chokes on fear but cant turn back
Lift collective and tilt cyclic forward
An express elevator minus instructor soars skyward
Then, punctures a warm glow of electric exhilaration
A pilot in command with the world at my feet
In comforting hands of brave pioneers long past
The adults faith renewed
But the frightened child has leapt into a dark chasm
Unfurled its wings for the first time
Defied the earths gravity
And survived.

Oh my, yes. I was right there with you...is this a chopper? I have been learning to fly simply to deflect my fear of flying...I do not know if I will solo or not.

This is a great description of first flight where you take command, and feel so vulnerable and childlike.
Your descriptions are so good.............loved this

A cacophony of screaming blades and juddering metal

Frenzied and alive it seems, a raging vortex
Inside an anxious child, quivering and abandoned................

Fab!! Screaming blades............I can't imagine how you plucked up the courage against such a
daunting machine! Bravo for you that you survived!
