Atlantis

Atlantis

A Poem by Stuart Ellis

In the moments before
I stood in the dark
awakened from disturbed sleep
in the back of a car on Cocoa beach
like a child in anticipation of great wonder
but wondering what to expect
from that distant little white speck
three miles across the water
on the threshold of a hazardous undertaking.
I listened to final radio assurances of impending departure
they filled me with trepidation
Their last words perhaps?
And then with countdown complete
the earth opened up
the sky fell in
an atomic detonation it seemed
engulfed me in resplendent light
and tumultuous cannonade
the ground trembled beneath my feet
and thundering high
brilliant white
atop a monument of incandescent orange.
seven brave souls roared, ablaze into the heavens
A glorious man made sunrise penetrating infinite icy blackness.
The seven inside this pressurised bullet
riding a thousand explosions
with a force to lift skyscrapers
filled me with awe.
And overwhelmed by this magnificent spectacle
my spirit longed to ride with them.
