The Magpie

The Magpie

A Poem by Stuart Ellis

What work of natural beauty
is the mighty Magpie
in its exquisite refinement?
This noble creature,
this distinguished force of nature?

It wasn't the thrill of the hunt I witnessed
as a timid, delicate fledgeling perched
But a perversion of fleeting horror
of thrashing wing and splitting head
Feathers scattering like autumn leaves

The mighty Magpie,
a butcher of innocents,
scavenger of the decrepit.
A cut throat black feathered terror
sweeping down to feast upon the weak
with pinning claw and stabbing beak.

I had to read this after recently writing "Shoot the Magpie"........and you have written
how I feel about this magpie that follows me everywhere.........your descriptions are so vivid, and
reminds me of a bird from the hammer house of horror, praying on the weaker more beautiful.........
Very enjoyable!
