HopeA Poem by Stuart EllisHope
You were with me
When I lay shivering in a pool of creeping sweat
buried under thick covers in the heat of summer
looking out into the night with heart pounding dread
for that spindly black whipping tentacled horror
that might come bounding into my bed,
And it didn't come.
You were with me
when i lay doubled in thick molten lethargy,
a globular magma tearing into my gut,
raging deep, flushing and spewing out
the last flickering warmth of tenderness,
until only an ashen cold skeletal soul remained,
But my soul remained.
And you will be with me
when i lay still as the primordial promontory
and the tired carbon water based cellular form
that i called home for the better part of a century
is reunited with its rich mother earth.
When my love for the life i leave behind
and the hope for my heavenly soul is all i have
When i have you.
