Giving Away A Smile

Giving Away A Smile

A Poem by Jethro del Cielo
"

Actually lyrics to a song of mine, but they stand as poetry on their own.

"

Giving Away A Smile

I gave away a smile today
to a beautiful girl I just met
There was no game to play
I just knew we'd end up in bed

And now she's stuck in my head
Yeah the covers have fallen off the bed
and she's naked still, innocent and bare
leaving is almost too much to bear

And for the first time in years

I find myself looking for redemption from up above

Oh dear Lord, yes oh dear Lord

I wish the morning never comes

I light a cigarette and sit down on the floor

Got Coltrane on like a thousand times before
She looks so innocent now
The easy love from yesterday ago

But at least for the night I know I'm alive
just by giving away a smile yesterday ago
That made everything alright
At least until morning light comes and I got to go

But morning's almost here, it's almost time for leaving
and there's nothing really I need to know
we're just lovers on the road who found some peace in
Finding some shelter from the storm

Before I go she wakes up, shakes her head
her hair looking like a storm of gold and red
in the light of dawn she gets out of my bed
and when I stepped out the door she said

"I always knew you couldn't stay, not until the end
that's just another sorrow  in broken world we can't mend
But when I'm desperate to stay ahead

I'll be glad this is where yesterday lead"
