The Anglerfish

The Anglerfish

A Poem by Craig Lewis

I am rare light in the dark

masking a fan of knives.

I reap rewards earned face to face,

I will never stab you in the back.

Appearances can deceive anything,

this crushing cloud of ink is never empty

but it’s a paranoid place, where everything hides.

I am a rare light in the dark.

Why search blindly through black

when my magnetic glow compels them?

They will find me. I will wait,

and mask my fan of knives.

A small shape discovers me,

it sketches a shadow on sand for the first time.

I let it admire the moment; then strike.

Reaping rewards earned, face to face.

I am death but not deception,

I give you every chance

And you will always see me coming.

I am a rare light in the dark
