My Heart

My Heart

A Poem by The Blood Poet

On Wednesday I had an echocardiogram done

an ultrasound for the heart

to check to make sure everything was ok.

For the first time in my life I saw my heart beat.

Endless, tireless, precious

and all mine.

The only one I have…

looking mortal, delicate, vital and vulnerable, finite and fragile

and yet it holds the powers and strengths of the universe -

Love.

I made a promise that day

to take better care of it.

Lift it up, give it the beauty of the world, put a coat on it so the heavy falls right through.
