Are You Cereal?A Poem by Crystal HeartWhen I was younger, my mother would say, “You can’t start another bag of cereal until you finish
this one today.” “But but these flakes are stale, Mom” Her: “If you don’t finish that bowl, all you will eat
is my palm” “All I wanted was some Fruity Pebbles in my bowl, okay?” And she would reply “Mija, that’s all we have until my
next pay” Growing up All I wanted was my cereal in a box. Well snap, crackle pop. More like I’m about to pop off. Why can’t I just have a magical day With some colorful rainbows and some Lucky charms in
my bowl today? I could even stan with some Raisin Bran, man. Honey Bunches of Oats is the GOAT. Apple Jacks would mean more to me than just a snack. Why can’t I just have a fun breakfast? With some games and a cartoon bunny on a box, Telling the other kids to get lost, Since Trix aren’t for kids. Every day, my dad comes home angry and yelling. He’s going coo-coo. Maybe we just need some money for
Cocoa Puffs. He still tells me I can go to school, Become a champion. Hard to believe that when we can’t even afford Wheaties.
I still remember that day when my mom proudly exclaimed,
“Mija, I finally got you some cereal in a box” I ran down the stairs expecting to see Toucan Sam, But, it was a parrot with the letters “Frooty Loops”. What
a scam. It wasn’t until I was 19 working in a grocery store, I used my first paycheck to purchase myself the holy
grail, That comes in a box, untouched and won’t go stale, I looked at Tony the Tiger and the coveted Frosty
Flakes, Took a bite of my first official brand boxed cereal
and just muttered happily, “Damn….they’re greeaaaat!” At this moment, I guess all I can say to you America, “Are you cereal right now?” © 2023 Crystal Heart |
