Decision

Decision

A Chapter by Stevie McGhoul

It took quite a bit of convincing to get Rain on board and help break some of the brainwashing. Eventually we came to the agreement that we needed to find our way back to The Corporation quickly and that Still needed to be thoroughly questioned. We began our two day haul back to The Corporation and did not speak. I had tried asking questions but she refused to say a word. Dad made a joke about one of the half dead birds resembling the ruler of the Elites but nobody laughed. I wish I was that bird. Able to take flight and amble myself away until reaching a natural end.
I let the thought of death have its moment in my head, questioned where it came from, and let it go. On the second day Dad finally broke. He stopped in his tracks and put his hands on Rains shoulders. “My love, you are precious to me. Both of you kids are. I need you to understand that The Corporation is not our hero. Rain, you yearn for freedom and individuality. You are capable. Brave, strong, confidant. I’m so proud of who you have become and so glad to have everyone together again. I worry that if we go back to that glass building now that we will be torn apart from each other.

We have a choice to make. Do we go back, and continue as we have. As partially functioning ‘Dillos, or do we find a new home and try to enjoy the time we have left with each other?” I raised my hand but it was my sister that spoke first. “There’s a third option.” She hissed. “we take them down from the inside.” I was startled. Where was this coming g from? I mean, it’s correct and had been my intention, but why did she say it? “Dirt, I saw what they did to you. They said you were violent and dangerous but from what I saw yesterday you are the same lover I grew up with. Maybe a bit wiser, but still a nerd. I thought I lost you forever when they threw you out into the bin. I saw the massive hole in your chest. I wasn’t sure how you survived but last night I snuck up and looked at your back. Your skin is two different colors.” Spruce, the mighty tree of a man, vomited to his right and looked at me like I had a third head. “Dirt, show me?” his unconfidant voice squeezed. I shook my head. “I’m glad we are in agreement. Let’s go destroy that building, and everything it stands for.”
