Forget Me Not

Forget Me Not

A Poem by Steven Pottle

We can easily breath in all new aromas
Better petals make my worn colours fade
But be prepared to be betrayed
As they exist just to be displayed
So the smell of your old flowers suddenly improve
The closer you get to the grave.

The title works well with this piece. This isn't something you can read once and make some bland remark about. It takes a minute or two to wrap your mind around it. The fourth line felt a little cumbersome to me. I tried it thus:

We can easily breath in all new aromas
Better petals make my worn colours fade
But be prepared to be betrayed
Posies exist to be displayed
So the smell of your old flowers suddenly improve
The nearer you get to the grave.

A wonderful, beautiful piece. It has such a Dickinsonian feel. . .
