Lucky

Lucky

A Poem by Steven Pottle

Your gentle voice is the sound of my little heart speaking
Your vocal chords are the walls of my insides exploding…
So I don’t even mind that my mind is sometimes unkind, unclear, never there
If you are here and still in love with me then my brain must be somewhere

Your eyes are the brightest tunnel endings and the widest open windows
They make me melt into the bedroom floor all over again…
So then why should I care if my hair is barely there, grey, dull and see through
Because if you are stating that’s it’s distinguished then I really do believe you

Your manner and expression perfects itself, transforming an already winning formula
The way that you make everyone bubble and fizz, feeling special is an amazing accomplishment…
So my old tired arms suddenly experience regeneration and are eager to please
If you think that they are hard and strong then that’s exactly what they will be

Your handsome hands demand touch and held together with pulses merging
The hairs on our arms vibrate and shiver travel round our bodies…
Then why should I let a little thing like disorganised green teeth eat away at me
I’ll hide my smile if you are saying that I’m the most beautiful you’ve ever seen

I suppose that I should just accept this unkempt mess that we refer to as my body
As you make me feel less stupid, useless, toothless and ugly
For you are standing before me with everything in it’s right place, everything as it should be
Sitting back to admire, I guess this is the true definition of lucky.

Steven, that's the most ambiguous poem I've read for a long time - how clever. On the one hand its a testmanent to how much someone is loved and how love can transform one's sense of self, but on the other its painfully sad to hear the negative inner voice of the adoring partner. Great balance and it creates a very wistful effect. I hope its not too literally autobiographical....

You have an exquisite sensitivity of expression and observation. I am jealous as in my more brutal way I do not. You see reality and you see romance...and the presence of love plain and simple makes all the difference in the seeing.

Dear Steven,

This is a powerful write about the amazing and sometimes inexplicable way love can change us, often to our amazement and disbelief. It is clear that you are deeply affected by this love, but it still hasn't completely chased away your mistrust that you can be loved, that your own self-image is not what others see, especially your love.

Very best regards,

Rick
