I Know Where I Come From

I Know Where I Come From

A Poem by Steven Pottle

I am your son
And you knew that I would be alright
So you threw me off the top of a cliff-
I survived
Got on with my life
And for that I will love you forever…

Your shoeless boy
Stepping out into piranha waters
You knew that I’d get safe to the other side without a single bite
So you pushed me in-
I breathe fast,
Moved quickly my arms
Looked back at you, waved, laughed and shouted “Thank you”

Can you feel the heart sometime?
Touch my wrist, touch my hand
Make both of us real men
No words need to be mentioned
Just the love that, I know, was needed to create me

And Dad, come and pat my shoulders wide
You’re the one who made me
You’re the one who can break me
See what I’ve grown into
See what has become of me
I’m not sure what you want to leave behind
But here I am, a faithful reminder of you and your achievements…

So hold me tight
Towel my wet hair dry
Show us how much you care
Like I know that you do
Now I know what I’m made of-
I know because I come from you.
