Spider In The Room

Spider In The Room

A Poem by Steven Pottle

There’s a problem
You think this isn’t massive
But it’s enough to upset the balance
A sense of dread
Slowly sinking into my head
The fear cannot be seen, but I know it’s always sitting there

Turn on the lights at four in the morning
I thought I heard you calling
The noise must have been from outside
But that doesn’t stop me from falling asleep while crying
I cannot say why, but there’s an air of doom
Like knowing that there’s a spider somewhere in the room…

The upsets
The sweats
The unseen threat
The bedclothes unkempt
The need to speak
But weak at the knees
The breath wheezes
Who will talk with me
Who will walk with me
Who will fall with me
I know you are still out there somewhere, wait in hiding
Where the f**k is that spider!?

The urgency of the emotional need stuns me because I have never felt like that. There is a desperation to the need for affirmation, company or comfort or something...love perhaqps. I assume the spider is just a device to get to the payload and to symbolise, very cleverly, the more pressing fear unseen of the absent lover. The absence is as real as the presence of a spider would be. And in the end you would find a spider coforting as the other fear is far deeper. The need I assume.
