The Moon Belongs To America

The Moon Belongs To America

A Poem by Steven Pottle

You travel endlessly around the world
And you can nearly speak every language
You buy all the trinkets that are dead cheap
Only to sell them to your friends for a small fortune
All those that rape and those that steal
Tell me do you feel like one of them?

Our airports hang heavy with the flames from burnt out jeeps and exploding people
But still private jets filled with the rich and famous set off to safety
We are just Joe public- faceless, stupid and caught up in the middle
This isn’t our fight, so how come we are the ones who’s losing
So can you at least tell us in advance when we need to be wearing our Government supplied gasmasks
Because I don’t want to die like a victim and I don’t want to die like a hero either…
I don’t want to die at all.

You I-spy your way around the world
We’re left guessing which country you’ll visit next
Bombing your way down all those deserted highways
Tearing down walls to put up fences
Only to sell them to your nearest rivals brothers
But you keep the grenades as cigar lighters

We try to look to where the bad things aren’t happening, but it’s happening everywhere
We are searching for the best form of escape- so do we follow the storm or decide to break the waves?
We’d love to jump on the next passing shooting star, but there’s no where to go as the moon belongs to America
Ask yourself what starts a fight?
No one cared until well known concrete hit famous pavements
I still don’t want to die until it’s my time
And this isn’t my time.

This isnt our fight, so how come we are the ones whos losing
So can you at least tell us in advance when we need to be wearing our Government supplied gas masks
Because I dont want to die like a victim and I dont want to die like a hero either
You see, I dont want to die at all.

Wed love to jump on the next passing shooting star, but theres no where to go as the moon belongs to America

OH OUCH..........what a strong piece.....conveying your disillusionment and
anger
the moon belongs to America, is a powerful statement, and so many world wide
suffer from acts of terrorism, tragic out come and the fear people are left in,
yet the famous seem safe as do the politicians, but are they?
No one is safe...............look at the up roar because Prince Harry didnt fight?!!

Loved the play on words..............I hope this gets featured!

You make me feel ashamed to be American. You know we don't all believe or act in those pompous unscrupulous ways. I like to think I'm above that.

interesting mix of helplessness, enlightenment and desperation. I don't like this poem which is why I like it.
