Adios Kansas

Adios Kansas

A Poem by Steven Pottle

A hand falls by the waist side
Police approach the pavement wide
Cats run for the safety of a parked car
And underneath they hide

A heart failed to keep up the beats
Uniformed feet move in close to the scene
Tapping at a blood stained jumper
Seeing if something still moves under

But he watched his world crumble
The planets humbled
As Hollywood was projected onto the moon
So no more screams from these streets
No more sounds of sudden feet
My best friend has left me all too soon

Now please carry his soul to a nicer place-
One of unbroken sunshine
One with endless funnies
And he’ll feel free to jump into the water there
The sea will be light blue and see through
Just like the sky…

Hope he’ll make some great mates
Hope he’s finally found his Emerald City
Maybe one day I will see him again-
So now I’m looking for my tornado.

I especially like the connection between the title and the hope that your friend "found his Emerald City". I hope you do see him again, one day. This is a beautiful write.

This is super stuff Steven. A wonderful story told in such a poetic fashion. There must be a further revelation - who was this person in a future poem? Loved the intrigue and loved the poem. Sorry it took me so long to review!

This is an excellent piece. A great tribute to a lost loved one.
I also loved the Hollywood was projected on the moon lines.
This is good, I think, because each line kept me moving and curious for the next one, and they startled me sometimes, the next ones. Love the one about the cats hiding under cars, too.
Great job!
Peace,
Cat

From description / forlorn to event to gift/empathy/hope back to the speaker.

I love your last line "looking for my tornado." And, I like how the AABA scheme shifts--here the rhyme isn't forced.

This seems an extremely personal piece.

I enjoyed this piece.

Deep, resonant. Lonely. I have a personal soft spot for "Dorothy and Kansas" since I was born there and the "Oz" series was my favorite as a child - I immediately gravitated to this piece. But what it says is more important - this was profound and well written. peace.

This may be a story, but it's a poem as well, but it's all good. Anyway, I enjoyed the ending, how you compared it similar to "Wizard Of Oz" Really great...

Wow, I feel sad and happy at the same time...I'm 100% sure he'll make some great mates on the otherside, and that he'll be met with a beer and a girly all ready for some fun in The Afterlife, waiting for you.:)
