Driving across the Hudson
on a rainy Friday night.
Chet Baker on the radio
blowing cool jazz from fifty years ago.
"Alone together" the deejay says,
as the windshield wipers keep time
with the soft brushes on the drums
and fat raindrops on the roof
give a tinny echo to the big notes
the sad man played.
driving home with the bittersweet tune,
played by a man long dead,
for a love long dead,
we prepare to be alone together
to share the music of silence.
Oh man...let me first just tell you I had David Allan Coe's "The Ride" in my head with the first line, which, p-freaking-s is awesome...(google the s**t out of that song if you have never heard it...it is...well...it's really good) ;-)...and then, as I let your words tumble down around me, I just lost myself in them. Those last five lines sent shivers. So good. So so good.

A lovely atmospheric piece and the ending is so ...well ... I do hope this is not your life. I quite like your poetic style Steve B.

I am wondering what my "style" is since I try my hand, often just for fun, at a number of styles. I think I know what my real voice is but wonder if it shows.
And while it is easy to think that my poems are autobiographical as I constantly tell my wie, any resemblence between the poetry and persons living or dead is entirely coincidencental. that usually gets me out of trouble.

The unison of the rain and music play a balancing act here with your verse... and the ending ties this piece... You give the reader a place and time... a flashback and back to the present again...
The imagery of a rainy drive home places my thoughts to wander... I can visualize the raindrops pelting on the windshield and the wipers swaying to and fro in time with the music. A melancholy emotion fills the air as the music lures to another time, somewhere lonely. This is a vivid description, nicely done. :)
