The blade pierced the tender skin of her neck, the runes glowing dimly in the dark light. Sharp teeth glinted in the darkness as the rosy lips twisted into a grim smile. Tendrils of dark red liquid creeped across the dusty floor, soaking the rotten floorboards, and puddling around his worn boots, but he thought nothing of it.

Striding forward, he picked up the already cooling hand, delicately slipping the golden ring from her thin wrist. There was no blood on the cold metal, even though it had been lying in a pool of the crimson liquid. But he could not dwell on such things. The contact with the thing was sending shivers through his tired body, clasping his heart in an icy grasp.

Reaching behind him, he pulled a glossy wooden chest from a beaten old bag slung across his back. He paid no attention to the intricate detail of the box as he flicked open the lid. He felt nothing but relief as he slipped the freezing metal into the silk folds, bending once more to release the bracelet’s partner from the other hand, sliding it in beside its twin, before snapping the chest shut with an echoing snap.

Spinning on his heel, he headed for the door, pausing only once in his stride to glance back at the corpse when he reached the exit. Her eyes were open, wide with frozen shock and fear. They were glassy, no hint of the evil flickering in there azure depths.

Feeling slightly reassured, he hurried away, with thoughts only on locking away the two rings lying innocently in his bag, so that he could finally sleep in peace once more. He hoped fervently that the rings would stay locked away this time, the evil never being unleashed on the world again.

A man could dream.
