Wondering Why

Wondering Why

Wondering Why

Rocks against which tormented waves crash

into whirlpools of desolation

wondering why

Knowing that there are depths beneath where

calm and peace can still the mind

only for the good

Just elusive dreams too deep to find for the

ungodly, too far away to reach

for the unbelieving

And so they thrash at the foot of mountains

too high to climb, weep into the tide

swimming against it

Then drown without ever having embraced

the rocks, admired the mountains, rested

on the tide of time

Angry young waves that are frightened

and lost, spinning in whirlpools

always wondering why.

Stella,
Perfect, your theme fits exactly into my personal zeitgeist. Beginning with the industrial evolution and the subsequent urbanization of Western Civilization, and continuing into the NOW, we have lost our minds and our souls. I am not speaking lightly or without evidence. Scientific studies show a dramatic, almost exponential growth in every kind of diagnosable mental disorder from simple phobias to the genetic. We have been crazy for about a hundred years now, but since we all suffer equally, no one seems to notice. I imagine myself in an isolated cabin with no electricity and no one passing by for a month... even with plenty of supplies, I don't think I would make it... but that is the way humanity lived through most of our time on earth. I used to tell my students to turn off all the lights and electronics the next time they were home alone and see how long they would last... ten minutes was too long for most of them...

This is a powerful write with strong emotions. The picture is fab - it adds some context here. I like that. The last stanza particularly stood out for me - these are impactful lines that say a whole lot.
"Angry young waves that are frightened
and lost, spinning in whirlpools
always wondering why."

Why? wondering why? is an eternal question. answers are hard. but what counts is the attempt to unravel it. The write is so wavy, it goes up and down, sort of taking us through the motion of waves lashing at the rocks, the feeling of lost and not having the courage to believe and fading into the whirlpool of emotions. This is a wonderful write to read and open for imagination. I like that for perspectives. Thanks for sharing.

The picture is pretty near what inspired the write, thank you for reading :)
this one gave me goosebumps! i love this kind of writing. there is a metaphor in here somewhere, but it is dressed up extravagantly and the author's true intention eludes us. yet the description of the waves and the rocks, the personification, the enjambments, the natural beat (much like an ocean wave) sweeps us in. strong writing dense in themes. this is a strong work.
