Part VI, War of Fates - I

Part VI, War of Fates - I

VI. In the seventh millennium of Reason's reign,
Reason put itself to short rest
Leaving Men capable of dreaming
And dreams serve Men the best -
Thus it was that at Reason's return
Men sought to subdue it to its primary form.

Then came Reason with its Priests and might
And fought with worn Men on Earth.
But Men's heart was heavy with void:
Men asked Compassion to ease the load
And Compassion answered the desperate call,
And henceforth, he tried to stood by Men's side.

Then, Reason's hellish clouds came about,
The ashen cataract struck hard on the lands
And the Priest's leech-like nature came about:
Yet, the pillar of life still stubbornly stands;
And Men called unto Mercy to be by his side
And Mercy came, and tried and tried.

"But Men's heart was heavy with void:" (hearts)????

"Then, Reason's hellish clouds came about,
The ashen cataract struck hard on the lands
And the Priest's leech-like nature came about:
Yet, the pillar of life still stubbornly stands;
And Men called unto Mercy to be by his side
And Mercy came, and tried and tried."

The above is sublime. My only question is "stands", the tense at odd with the rest, I get the rhyme....
