The Reluctant Doctor

The Reluctant Doctor

A Poem by Here's What I Say
"

I don't want you to need me. I want you to want me.

"

The important things to get done

To save you

Aren't things that

I do.

There's only so much

I do

That actually can

Save you.

I can pull out the bottle

Open it

Pour it onto a spoon for you

And I do it.

I could probably

Force your lips

Open

Do I have to?

But you

My love

My baby

Must swallow

I cannot do that for you.

Stethoscopes

Black bags

Needles

Don't turn me on.

If I save you

Give you

Your

Life

Then it wasn't really

Yours

To

Begin with.

Florence Nightengale

Effect in progress

Trying

To stop it.

But no matter how it is born

Under water birthing

Sterile operating room

Or backseat of an old Dodge

Love is always love.

I

Love

You.

I do.

What do you see me as?

Will you still want me

When you stop

Needing me?

"Will you still want me

Needing me?"

Those particular lines were absolutely crushing to me. I couldn't even begin to tell you why I identify with them so much... perhaps on a maternal level? Most likely on a relationship level, as it was intended. This piece was so unique and just brilliantly written; definitely evoked a lot of emotion from me when reading.

Brilliance in its complex simplicity. This was a lovely piece. The title was even brilliant. I just loved it.

I agree with perfectlymetiKulous. The last lines:
"Will you still want me
When you stop
Needing me?"

Definitely made the poem complete and gave it that great ending that all poems need. They made me stop and think and try to understand what was being said. Thanks for entering the "Someone Special" contest.

Great write once again. I love your style. None of your reads sound the same as the previous and that's a great thing!

We all become the "parent" to our significants every once in a while. But I get what you're saying here as you speak about constantly being that to this person and possibly being taken for granted. I love your descriptions once again! Good write!
