Gay Couples Can ProcreateA Poem by Here's What I SayWho says gay couples can't bring new life?
Before they went their separate ways
Lance Bass
And Reichen Lehmkuhl[1] had a baby
A little girl
Born on July 26th
Of 2006
She was long overdue
Her first breath was a cuss word
Several more followed
She cried and screamed
Scared of the world Lance bore her to
She knew the darkness that enclosed her
And so did Lance
But she didn’t know what dark was
Lance ached inside
To release them both from the darkness
He was scared that she would hate him
And while she was pushed out of his darkness
She still recognized him
To know him is to love him
* * * *
Reichen didn’t have her love
He didn’t carry her
He wasn’t the first one she saw
He looked different
So she spat up in his face
She was more attached to Lance
But eventually let Reichen hold her
She began to interpret the world around her
Learning to speak right away
He still didn’t have her love
But she had his voice
She’d grow up to be a lot like him
One night Reichen told her a story[2]
Of the man who would become Lance’s love
She cried and screamed again
Of the hero’s horrors
He endured hell
In the place that taught him to fly to heaven
Like a true soldier
He fought for the rights in her heart
That he should have had when she was born
She inherited a sense of fairness
She gave her love to Daddy Reichen
* * * *
No good parent in their right mind
Takes their daughter to a club
So how would she know what transpired
That December night?
One minute they were fine and the next
They cried
She wished they would be together forever
December only lasted a month
A new year meant a new home for Daddy Reichen
Through her tears she continued to speak
For the rights that she doesn’t have to fight for
And hoped she’d marry a man like Daddy Reichen or Lance
The fact is
The house they lived in was too small
Some families live in two or more houses
If Reichen and Lance didn’t cry
Who would Daddy Ryan and Ben sleep with?
