look at me

A Poem by Julia Squires

i can look into someone and tell what they are
spend a moment within them, and say what i see
as softly i smile, imparting, empathetic
and they leave having learned a little thing about them

do they ever look at me?

i spent the day roaming the streets of a city
on feet that existed somewhere else the whole time
because really i can't seem to care for this life
i'm always in the future, and the now is out of joint

i was never meant to blend

convincing myself that i'll be confident today
reveal how i feel, and meet someone's gaze
but my mind goes blank when i step out the door
the sunlight bleaches my memory

i'm a slate of cold steel

but as i lie there aching
in the alabaster emptiness
from the corner of my eye
i can see what i've sought

are you looking at me?

or am i looking the wrong way?

I study people also. When I was young I did a lot of traveling. I like the statements in the poem. Good to know what someone is and thinking. I believe people study us. Sometimes best to hide your true face to dangerous people. Thank you for sharing the excellent poetry.
