figure it out

figure it out

A Poem by Julia Squires

enigma understated
heaving the whole world on one surface
setting tiny little plates, teatime for two
and across from me is the mirror

will i look in my eyes and be honest?
eyes above the battlefield,
the earth laid out between us?
divide by identity,
maybe it's just math
so solutions split and tangle
and i wonder if we won
as i wonder if we're one

midnight mornings are draining me dry
but i can't seem to sleep when i know what i need
so i pour out my tea, and i offer some to me
"would you like to be better?"
she can only agree

we settle on down to take our drinks
alone and surrounded, unanswered invitations
and i smile at the circles that hold up her eyes
enigma understated, the mystery mine

figure it out
