A Vision in Vain

A Vision in Vain

A Poem by Julia Squires

Yet in the darkness,
Yet in the yearning...

Images dance in the blaze of the brain,
Proverbial place where happiness plays
Like a puppet on strings of desire;
Ensnared, entwined, these threads of time,
A trap in which to fall; they chafe at chains,
Distasteful names, wrapped in wool and wire.

Agility, fragility.
Strength of the strings,
Tug of the tide;
Strangers on the shore,
Shadows down the line.

A vision in vain, a blaze of the brain,
A trick of the light, but not by day,
For the dark is where it's safe
To dream of another place...

It isn't real, but how it feels
Attracts in times of need;
But the numbness
And the knowing,
The illusions
And delusions,
Do much to disrupt
What joy there was.

A refuge in the ruling,
A sight that once was soothing,
But the eyes that I've been using
See shadows fade away.
The comfort I covet,
No sign of the summit,
And although I love it,
The night becomes day...

Yet in the darkness,
Yet in the yearning,
Can't seem to focus,
Can't stop the turning...

I spin in the spaces
That blaze in my brain.
