Starlight Shoals

This was one of my earliest poems on deviantART, based off my username, StarlightShoals. At the time it was meant to encapsulate the core of who I was, so I poured my heart and soul into writing it~

I took a walk down starlight shoals,
Before the sunrise came;
I gathered pieces of shattered souls,
No one but them to blame.

I gave my life for a stranger's strife,
Entombed within the sand;
I wrote my name with a reaper's scythe,
Engraved upon the land.

I waxed and waned above the moon,
Bringing birth to children two;
I watched the twins go out at noon,
Watched one return and one consumed.

I cut my hand and let it bleed,
Too young to dress the wound;
I saved a plant and dropped a seed,
But never saw it bloom.

I ran a mile and doubled back,
Yet never found the start;
I loved a friend and wanted more,
But suffered a broken heart.

I reached for heaven with both my hands,
And the earth gave way beneath me;
I saw a pair of golden bands,
And knew they would deceive me.

I lay in bed on a night for thanks,
Four years and three months ago;
I left the soldiers' broken ranks,
And struck off on my own.

I never asked to be this way,
To walk down starlight shoals;
I'm paying the price we all must pay,
To be young before we're old.
