Starlight ShoalsA Poem by Julia SquiresThis was one of my earliest poems on deviantART, based off my username, StarlightShoals. At the time it was meant to encapsulate the core of who I was, so I poured my heart and soul into writing it~Before the sunrise came; I gathered pieces of shattered souls, No one but them to blame. I gave my life for a stranger's strife, Entombed within the sand; I wrote my name with a reaper's scythe, Engraved upon the land. I waxed and waned above the moon, Bringing birth to children two; I watched the twins go out at noon, Watched one return and one consumed. I cut my hand and let it bleed, Too young to dress the wound; I saved a plant and dropped a seed, But never saw it bloom. I ran a mile and doubled back, Yet never found the start; I loved a friend and wanted more, But suffered a broken heart. I reached for heaven with both my hands, And the earth gave way beneath me; I saw a pair of golden bands, And knew they would deceive me. I lay in bed on a night for thanks, Four years and three months ago; I left the soldiers' broken ranks, And struck off on my own. I never asked to be this way, To walk down starlight shoals; I'm paying the price we all must pay, To be young before we're old. © 2014 Julia Squires |
