Those were the flowers

Those were the flowers

A Poem by Quinn
"

I decided to use a random subject generator and romance came up. Here was my attempt.

"
Those were the flowers
That was the tree
Where we knelt down for hours
And he asked to marry me
We were to be married
Just a few months time
So homeward I was carried
As we did we’d hum and chime
The sun broke for morning
Cutting through the room
But it was a warning
The army called in full bloom
They needed men for war
And they paraded them out
Flags high and hung on each door
Like the first day as a scout
He mouthed he'd be home
He gave me a final look
When they come back from where they roam
I’d be right here, however long it took
I started up our business
Jams and fruits and sweets
I worked through the sadness
Lying alone beneath the sheets
They said I was naïve
That he wouldn't return
I said that I believe
Month after month I would yearn
I got a little message
Saying he was taken
Under the captain Lesage
Now I was alone and shaken.
I went to those daisies
I went to that oak tree
Night and day as the world became hazy
As I cried, emotions running free
Weeks gone by, I felt a hand on my shoulder
It was warm and rough
My head turned to see him slightly older
But it didn't matter, it was him sure enough
We could finally say our oaths at rest
Stood hand in hand
Me in my dress, him in his best
We both felt fuzzy and wonderfully grand
But as I walked out the church
My ring on my finger
I fell, I felt my husband lurch
People didn't linger
Now I lay forever
Up beneath the trees
My husband never leaves, whatsoever
He sings and sleeps beneath in the breeze
I waited so long
I didn't realise
I thought I was strong
But I know it was lies
Next to the flowers
Under the tree
Where we knelt down for hours
And he asked to marry me

What a beautiful poem. The emotions are raw and well spoken. You have crafted a poignant tale of love here. The cadence makes it an easy and pleasurable read. Well done.
