Lawrences' Lil' Reesey Cup (August 7, 2008-January 6, 2009)

A Poem by Delilah Dunn
"

Written 1/7/08 in memory of my sweet Reeses Pieces, one of our miniature dachshunds gone to wait for us on the Rainbow Bridge.

"

Our precious little Reeses Pieces--
     Chocolate drop of love;
     Sweet, sweet squirrel
Is lying in the living room floor where
She has played
She has slept
She has known a caring home

And now she is dying--

She will not suffer a lengthy trial
She will only go to sleep and
There will be no true goodbye as is only fair
For I would like to know that she knows
She was never once alone

But we will remember--

The puppy whose tiny head and large, floppy ears
Burst from beneath a pile of towels in
A breeder's backseat laundry basket
As if to shout hello

The parrot puppy on Daddy's shoulder
Balancing carefully and snuggling beneath his chin
She was deemed the baby once and for all
And even litters of puppies later that fact could never change

Each of those litters her own treasured babies
Beloved and impeccably cared for
Guarded like tiny jewels from a crown of royalty
Some even remaining to love her for life

And all the way from lady bug costumes and minute sweaters
To crisp hunting trips and warm campfires
From belly rubs following a single begging paw
To liquid dark chocolate eyes dripping with a desperate, unconditional love

We have, we do, we will always love her
And we will forget:

Her brief suffering
Her sudden sickness
Her untold passing away

And we hold only to the journey:
A glowing moment in time surrounding us
Like a brilliant late-summer sunset
When she was ours to love

And we never say goodbye:
For she will only be gone from our sight
For another all too brief moment
And we will meet again.

So precious!! How sweetly and adorably you've described this best friend, using skilled and talented prose to capture her, until we all are completely endeared and fall in love with this "Chocolate drop of love". How unlucky we all are not to have known her!
Loved it! And the picture is adorable!
