Broken and Torn

Broken and Torn

A Poem by Delilah Dunn

"

Your smile fades
As love turns to anger
Your words shoot forth
Darts in my chest
Piercing
Like a rusty nail in the bottom of a bare foot

You love me
I know it to be true
Though rage envelops you
Surrounds and flows through
Onto me
Like a crested wave slamming into the shore

I wonder
What it is that traps you
That holds you beneath
A contemptuous glare
Crushing you
Though you still are only beauty to me

You scream
And I cower before the volume
You detest and despise
Yourself perhaps, or is it really
Me?
Yet I cannot abhor what I truly adore

I will give myself away
To the power of your rage
If it means that I will go with a memory
Still clear
Of love
Ashes from days that may be long departed
