Something Else

"...Something else?" Niqi asked, looking up at Therali curiously. Hadn't they already saved the universe?

Therali nodded. "Fisnal and I have been looking into it, but we can't figure it out. There's something... wrong with the past. Like events that already happened are somehow being altered."

"That's...disturbing." Niqi frowned, looking uncomfortable. "How are we involved?"

"How is anyone not?" Therali replied. "So far, it's been small things, but we're fearing the worst."

Niqi swallowed. "What do you want us to do?"

"A small group will come with me, into the past." Therali said. "It's going to take a lot of power for me to get us there, but I can't just sit here and watch."

Glide raised a paw. "I'm coming."

"Of course you are." Therali muttered, rolling his eyes. "'Tani, Dham, Dominique, Ambree. You four will be coming, as well. The rest will remain here, to assist Fisnal with his investigation."

Niqi felt a shock go through her at hearing her real name. She ruffled her hair and muttered something unintelligible, and then more clearly said, "Let's not waste any time, then."

"Brace yourselves." Therali said, raising his scythe. He spun the weapon, then stabbed it into the empty air, the blade seeming to cut a hole in time itself. With the rip in time came a howling wind, which seemed to cut through to the bone. "Jump through!"

Niqi jumped through first, Ambree close behind.

Glide grabbed Shetani's paw and heaved the goddess through, leaping in after her.

Dham hesitated, looking back at Dex. "... Hopefully, I'll see you again soon." He said, following Glide.

Therali smirked, yanking his scythe free and stepping through as the rip sealed.

Niqi came out on the other side first, and watched as the others poured in. She took notice of the area they were in shortly after Therali passed through and sealed the rip. It was a town, more healthy and normal-looking than many of the places they had been. "Where are we?" she asked Therali.

"You should know." Therali replied. "This is your planet... and the birthplace of your group's leader."

Glide froze in mid-step. "This is-"

"Hallsville, Missouri." Therali nodded.

Niqi went completely still, eyes bulging. She was silent for several moments. "...Earth?" she finally whispered.

Therali nodded again. "Earth, in the year 1892."

"Ages ago," Niqi stated, and then looked at Glide and tried to smile. "You're old."

"F**k you." Glide muttered, his open paw connecting with the back of Niqi's head.

Niqi glared and rubbed at the spot Glide had hit.

"Did some event alter at this point in time? Is that why we're here?" Ambree asked, ignoring them both.

"It hasn't happened yet." Therali said. "But there's been a pattern to this, and this should be where the next alteration takes place."

Niqi stopped rubbing her head. "What should we look for?"

Therali shrugged. "Distortions in the air that could signify an open rift, anyone dressed in clothing that isn't from this time, anything that's out of the ordinary."

Niqi nodded absently, looking around at the small town. "I take it we're staying out of the public eye. Are we splitting up?"

Therali shook his head. "We need to stay together. Anyone that's capable of this is bound to be too much for just one of us."

"Alright, someone lead the way," Niqi said, glancing between Therali and Glide.

"I'll lead." Glide said. "I know this town." He paused for a moment, glancing at the rest of the group. "Did anyone grab my weapons? I... may have left them Up There..."

Therali rubbed his temples. "Good grief... This is the only time I'm doing this." Black orbs surrounded him, carrying him upward. After a few moments, he orbed back down, Magus in his paws and Revan by his side.

Niqi raised an eyebrow. "Since when does Revan count as one of Glide's weapons?"

"He wouldn't let me leave without bringing him along." Therali replied.

"Now that that's settled, let's get goin'." Glide smirked, taking his blade from Therali. "Before I starting busting your heads out of boredom."
