Late in the night, Glide left the Blackhoof clan's settlement, heading into the forest. He and Raven's Nest had discovered that the Blackhoof clan became incredibly loud during the night, and it wasn't the kind of place he wanted to stay. Briefly, he wondered how the others could sleep with that much noise.

After a few moments of wandering, he reached another clearing, smaller than the one that housed the Blackhoof settlement. In the clearing was a large pool of water, surrounded by stones. Steam rose from the water, lingering in the cold night air for a few seconds before being carried away on the wind. "I can hear you breathin', and I know your scent, Revan." Glide tossed over his shoulder, shedding his vest. "Come on out and fill me in on why you're followin' me."

Revan emerged from the trees, joining Glide beside the hot spring. "I needed to talk to you, Nar'zun."

"'Bout what?" Glide asked, tossing his fishnet shirt onto the ground with his vest. "I'm gonna go out on a limb here and guess that it can't wait until morning."

Revan nodded. "I... want to become your apprentice. Aside from Mom, you're the most powerful person I know, and I know you'd teach me things she wouldn't. So... please, Nar'zun. Teach me. Take my life, take my mind, take my soul, take my will. I'm in your paws now."

Glide raised an eyebrow. "Gods, kid." He muttered, removing his boots. "Don't think you went a little bit overboard there?"

"A true apprentice belongs to his master completely." Revan stated. "I'll do what has to be done to gain control of my powers, and to strengthen them."

Glide thought about it for a moment, then nodded. "You know I'm gonna work you until you're ready to collapse. I'm not just gonna help you with your powers, I'm gonna train you until you can rip someone's heart out so fast that it's still beating when you force-feed it to them. Every day with me will push both your body and your powers to the limit."

"I know." Revan responded. "I still want your help."

Glide's pants joined the rest of his clothing, the Varixian slipping into the hot spring. "You're insane, kid." He laughed. "And I guarantee you'll feel like you're gonna die dozens of times before we're done. But you never will, I promise you that."

"What's first on the agenda, master?" Revan asked, disrobing and getting into the hot spring as well.

Glide smirked, pulling his eyepatch off. "Tomorrow, we start with my favorite element. Fire. You're gonna learn to conjure it, control it, and even extinguish large amounts of it with nothing but your mind. Just like me."

...

Everyone gathered in Malrot's dining hall the following morning, wondering how the chieftain would respond to their request. After Malrot's breakfast, they received their answer.

"What the humans are doing is for the good of Var and the Varixians." Malrot stated. "We will not stand against them. The entire Blackhoof clan is behind the humans one hundred percent."

"Y'know, I was hopin' you'd see it our way." Glide said, sighing and shaking his head. "If you guys are really behind the humans, you know I'm gonna have to kill you, too, right? Every Varixian that raises a weapon beside the slavers will die beside the slavers."

After a moment of tense silence, Shetani spoke to the Blackhoof chieftain for the first time. "He isn't joking." She said. "He'll go so far as to destroy every Blackhoof Varixian on the planet. He will raze your settlements to the ground and hunt you to extinction."

"Who are you?" Malrot demanded. "The messenger of death?"

"No." Shetani responded, lowering the cowl of her robe.

Malrot stared at her, shaking his enormous head. "It can't be true..."

"It's true." Shetani said. "And now that you've told us that you're on the side of the slavers, you'll forever be our enemies. It won't matter if you switch sides, you'll never be trustworthy again."

"You'd best make peace with m' girl and her son, tubby." Glide added, turning on his heel and heading for the door. "'Cause, before this is over, you're gonna be dead, and who knows where you'll end up if they still don't like you when the time comes?"

Shetani raised an eyebrow, but said nothing, watching Glide leave. When the hell did it go from my name to 'my girl'?
