RepetitionA Story by Star CatcherSlightly more than poetry; not quite a story. Just some musings about repetition in the human mind.
The human mind works largely on repetition. Things that matter are repeated hundreds, thousands, perhaps millions of times in our thoughts. We pass over them again and again; ideas, memories, phrases, melodies, feelings, and anything else that can somehow be twined into a thought. We keep repetitious records of things that have great meaning in some way. Sometimes, because of this phenomenon of repetition, horrible things that we don’t want to repeat are repeated regardless, because in some way, they matter. Heartbreaks. Traumatic events. Death. Sometimes, when we are trying to lie to ourselves, we repeat the lie over and over to make ourselves believe. The repetition stresses the importance – but we cannot fool our subconscious for long. Our capacity for self delusion relies on our ability to force repetition where instinct would usually make us repeat unconsciously. Not many have that talent, and so self delusion is usually a temporary state. But not for me. I’m holding onto a dream that I know for a fact will never come true. While reason says the repetition should stop, it doesn’t. It repeats over and over, every single night. I think the same thoughts. I feel the same feelings. And at the end of every day, no matter how far moved on I’ve convinced myself I am during the past hours, my happy façade crumbles, and I’m left with one question. Over and over. Why?
