The Ugly Duckling

Once there was a young girl who believed that she was ugly.

For everyone told her so, and therefore it must be true.

Over the years, she grew older and continued to believe in that myth.

She spurned any compliments, not believing in them, for they were false truths.

They could not be true, for she was the plain Jane.

The one that nobody noticed.

The one that was the so called ugly duckling.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Then one day, something strange happened.

The young girl, now a young lady, changed her attitude.

No longer did she believe the old truths.

Instead, she accepted her plainness and developed an outgoing personality.

She became quirky and eccentric.

Not paying attention to other people’s opinions of her any more.

She accepted herself for the first time, and found something amazing.

She liked herself, really liked herself.

From that day forward, she lived life according to how she wanted to and felt.

And found out something else.

She was no longer the ugly duckling.

She was vibrant, alive, happy and had people who liked her for herself.

She had come a long way.

She was no longer the ugly duckling.

She was beautiful in her own way.

The end

This is a fine; self-expressive piece! I don't recall when I started thinking and saying "if you don't like what your looking at look at something else" but, it helped me get thru those "feeling un-attractive" years and slowly I realized that I don't see myself as that plain jane any more. Good write!

You expressed yourself well. Confidence bore beauty and people would never see an ugly duckling. At times we are feel like this is an ugly day or week hopefully not month but we forget to look inside and realize who we are. I like this poem. Thanks for requesting the read. Way to finish my night!

High Praise! Can I get an Amen? haha
Good for you and as they say, You Go Girl!

Me, opposite. Was beautiful (though shy)
had many a high praise and all the boys attention;
until some major events happened, one two three,
that left me believing that what once was truth had
become jaded and soiled.

So I twisted and turned; reshaped myself ..
into something that would no longer draw
attention. Be it right, be it wrong; it's a matter of opinion.
And so, I've created my own little paradise of hell.

Funny what we can conjure in ourselves.
Yes, I scream to break away from my shackles and chains.
And for brief moments; I do.

Susan, this is beautiful, isn't it amazing that if you truly believe you can be or do anything you want. This has to go into my favorites, well said.
