Thumbing through the pages of the book of life

Thumbing through the pages of the book of life

A Poem by SpokenWord
"

Inspired by the many conversations with poetic friends on this site

"
Pages turn silently
as sand drains through glass
light reflects through clarity
into pieces shared by reality
and he bends on hands and knees
with fingers bleeding
he tries to repair the twine
that has unwind
unraveled time
within only his mind
he sees the reflection
of a broken spirit
trampled by the dirty feet
of men who sleep in white houses
and work on capital hills
where the market bull ruled the day
and sinners played at night
spinning love into lust
upon the back of lies
woven from the fragments
of man's character
now diluted by
principalities in high places
Santa Clause with a dirty white beard
and fingers dipped in green ink
told fables of distant promises
to calm the masses from seeing
reality of life and death....

"PEACE" whispers the angel
into the ear of the man
who now plays with his blood
trying to turn it from life giving
into magic to heal the earth
a genius in his own right
he compiles formulas
that should reverse time
bringing life back into our soil
return vibrant blues into the gray sky
extract the poison from water
returning it to clarity
once again a healing power
rebirth of trees
to give us fresh oxygen
but the Angels speaks
"Why do you wast the time you have left?"
and the man cries burning tears
into his scared hands
his hurt mixes with the hard clay of the earth
"My children, our future, my God! What have we done?"
with an angelic smile the angel
sits by the side of the last man on earth
to comfort him as the truth now comes to light
"Everything has a beginning and an end
says, the Alpha and Omega"
and the angel takes his hand
to lead him home
returned to the dust
where he once came from

Here's such a beginning and an end.. and, here's so many thoughts and emotions filling the pillow upon which your busy mind leans. Intriguing stuff. Somehow you've stretched time across here to there with mention of 'power-full' and financial greed and the storm it creates for the small man, the man who wants/needs to live a life.
Then you fly on to what could and can be, from the sad urge to magic what we have into something so wonderful that Heaven need shake in its space. Enter the would-be bountiful angel who calls to tell you the truth and nothing but: whatever we are, however we are, we all end up the same.
Sorry, gone on far too long, have read twice, thought far more.

The title is so subtle and then the poem comes with a bang and blows me away. Great description!

The first part of the poem illuminates itself as the faulty way of life conflicting with the fantasy of humankind. In the first few lines, it displays how we are finite beings; terminal. With the wordplay,

"men who sleep in white houses
and work on capital hills
where the market bull ruled the day," it portrays political influences as the face of our country. America is superficial, to say the least. The "American Dream" has been interpreted as who can collect the most junk. Like compulsive food eaters, we fill the void with consumer's goods in the pursuit of happiness. The last few lines of the first stanza indicates how we use fantasies to coverup the reality with a sort of false hope to some extent. We abuse the goodness of fantasy such as the Santa Clause fable. The meaning behind that belief is pure; to revive the idea behind the red suit. It is but one example that has been used in the poem itself. We mutilate its meaning by using Santa Clause as a marketing tool.

The second stanza is almost a plea to humankind to mend their current way of living; showing them how to live. The questions presented indicate that we waste the life we have been gifted; living a different agenda someone else has left for us. There is also the concept of a beginning and ending that arrives in the introduction and conclusion. Its message carries forth to persuade us to not live in vain, but embrace the beauty unscathed.

I would also like to add that I am a bit rusty, old friend. haha Like always, I am always impressed with what you have created; a pool of slithering thoughts, indeed.

Lovely movement, rhyme and rhythm, as always SW :)
Very well written in the rhythm and pace, and a pleasure to read.
Delicate, clear, evocative images... fingers bleeding repairing the twine... dirty feet of men who sleep in white houses... and many others. Your descriptions are beautiful highlights, very concise, and scattered delicately throughout the text, absolutely textbook, really enhancing the poem and making it come alive, without losing the core and the cohesion of the piece. I love it :)
There is also a lot of insight here as to the lies sold to society, sold to us to prop up an economic system founded mostly on myth and gullibility, and how those myths are sold to us. "Spinning love into lust" is I think a great way of expressing how our consumerist society has been taught to seek instant gratification, to seek pleasure easily in consumption, and also disposability... we learn to throw things away lightly, rather than cherishing them. "Fables of distant promises" is also direct, concise and to the point... I love this, great writing!

Hello spokenword,

I was stopped by these words;
"that has unwind
unraveled time"
I think that may because of grammar rules. "that has unwound" would be correct grammar. You might want to think of editing and write;

["he tries to repair the twine that unwinds in unraveled time"]

That arrangement rolls off the tongue much better in my reading aloud.

This is a powerful writing. The politics of this day is part of the great prophesy that is written in many chapters of the good book. No matter what else is happening God is still in charge. Good work poet.

Much Respect,
Renee

I often say this. Each day I make it a point to click on a new face and read something by a person I have never read before. This poem was such a delight to find. Both thought provoking and illuminating while stirring the emotions and delighting the mouth and ear when read out loud. A perfection. It has a length that is needed to enjoy its wealth.
