America the Beautiful

America the Beautiful

A Poem by SpokenWord

I remember watching the preacher man
perform illusions from his pulpit of make believe
he told us stories about living life as a lamb
in a world full of wolves that are hunted
by the endangered bald eagle from above

Do you really think I believe
that God intended for me to hurt
when his only begotten son
took all illness and sin from this earth?

My Mother died from lung cancer
commercials say smoking does that
My Grandfather died from congestive heart failure
professionals say excessive drinking causes this
If this is true then
why are both these products
still available on local store shelves?

Why?
because...

your just another carbon unit
working to pay on your slave taxes
a living debt that we pass on to our children
every child born is born owing the government 800 large
their bill to be called an American

Now do you understand why
at times illegal immigrants piss me off
they get the benefit without owing a thing
we can't take care of our own
and I am tired of taking care of yours

but my faith says
it is still my responsibility
so I give with a smile
and love in my heart
still my brain isn't dumb
people are get over artists
from the perpetual welfare clients
to the wealthy who claim insurance fraud

didn't they tell you about America?

we're the original gangsters
a melting pot with a whole lot of guns
and atomic bombs for fools who try us

ask the one's who have messed with us

We found Saddam in a hole
put him on trial in his own country
then hung him live on the internet

we put a bullet in Bin Laden's head
straight mafia now he'll never have his day in court
the war on terror continues
empty victories for our fallen heroes of 9/11

Don't let me start preaching about
Regan, Bush, Clinton and Obama
homeland security would put 3 hot ones in my chest

So put on your Sunday best
get on your knees and pray to God
give praise and honor to his name
preach to me how I am going to hell
while you dance on the grave of the evil dead
then tell me how
how is that an eye for eye ended with the birth and death of Jesus
and how vengeance is mine saith the Lord
and today we celebrate murder in the first degree

That's right we're the good guys
jolly green giants that rule the earth
and all others are evil doers

Tell Mr. Preacher man
is this the America that God is pleased with?
does he see us as living in his son's name
explain to me again how we should live as a lamb

a resounding and nonreligious AMEN!!! to every word within this revelatory poetic from the pouting lips of this failing Buddhist~ you nailed it to its own cross~ altruism in tatters~ ambiguity rules the modern day~ what a shambles we have permitted to take root~ bravo to your courage~ your honesty and the wildly captivating force with which you turn that mirror on us all~ BRAVO!

woah, deep. as for your closing critisisms; jesus himself condemned entire towns (and a fig tree) while walking the earth because they didn't accept his message. deuteronomy does say eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth. other fun facts about the bible, 1 corinthians and galatians both recommend throwing people out of church... leviticus and deuteronomy recommend stoning people to death, joshua and judges both cite different stonings. there was a massacre of israelites in nehemiah (i think its nehemiah anyway, perhaps ezra or malachi), because they married foreign women. it's all in the bible. (: oh, and jesus's first miracle? water into wine. alcohol. just saying. :) sorry to come down harsh, i actually did really enjoy this poem and think that it makes very good points.

I'm neither American nor Christian and it really interested me to know that I could have the same thoughts, the same questions as you.
Bin Laden is just another reason for Americans to blot out their constant desire for war (this is if Bin Laden does really exist _I am an Arabian_)
God's testing us, still giving us the chance to fix the errors while we're just making it worse than before...Are we really just perfect in annihilating, in destroying the grace that God has created for us?
_Although the just requital for an injustice is an equivalent retribution, those who pardon and maintain righteousness are rewarded by GOD. He does not love the unjust. (Qur'an 42:40)._
Great poem with a very powerful message.

Ooo, i think this would totally be to the sound of a rap song hehe! Yeah, it was really good!! I agree 100%. What aslo ticks me off, too, is that why the hell are we (and I'll use my girlfriend's phrase) still bending over backwards to these other countries, when they haven't done s**t for US??!! Ugh, i'll never understand it at all. Yep, and i still agree that even with Bin Laden dead, the war will never end =/ And you're right, too. The only thing we can do now is pray =/ Great piece tho. Very well done!

amazing!
there is big mask on the face of america. a mask of good natured elder brother to all nations. well, they took it from their own people and used it for personal reasons. the dualities in their nature make them dubious. americans are equally victimized by their own government.
this poem brings out the core issues. i liked the anger and frustration running at the point where the preacher suggests people to be lamb and put a blind fold on whats going on around.
a electric write. loved it!

An angry poet. I like it. You can say more in a poem about injustice than you can say in a whole book, if you say it right. Good Job!

Ridiculously true. I, too, can not understand why God can watch down upon us and see this country falling apart. Here, all we do is lie, cheat, steal, arrest, kill, and hurt. There are things our government does that we don't know about it. Americans can work hard all their lives and end up with nothing. Isn't that what communism does? Isn't a democracy supposed to avoid that? I may be only 13 but I see what the adults see and it's not pretty. The honesty and raw emotion pinpoints our exact thoughts beautifully. But understanding them isn't going to change anything. We have to.
