Love and the Mad Hatter

Love and the Mad Hatter

A Poem by SpokenWord
"

Being envious and living in the past is no way to love

"

She starred into the mirror trying to remember
her more youthful days as a radiant beauty
with her eyes opened as wide as possible
the Mad Hatter counted all her new wrinkles

1,2 No 4! there's more!
she cried in disbelief at the power
that time has over all living beings
except the Queen of Hearts
she is always beautiful, the Hatter thought

"More green!, more green!, quickly!"
her voice screamed into the mirror
her servant protested, claiming that she had
enough green on to cover the entire planet

Hatter grabbed the green makeup
and slashed it all over her eye lids
she blinked fast and hard at her own reflection
there! there! the wrinkles have vanished!

"Excuse me Ma'am but your company is watching"
her servant said pointing to the prince on the sofa

Hatter tilted her hat to the side then
marched over to the prince and growled
"You pervert! You was watching my a*s!
Your just like my last boyfriend.. first a finger
then your candle stick... sick sick sick!

The prince raised his hand to cover his face
just as hatter tried to hit him on the lips

"D****t Johnny, why did you leave me for the Queen?"
her finger pointed directly at his nose
she sat down beside him and started to cry
"You think she's more beautiful than me!
Don't you? Don't you!
Hatter screamed

The prince leaned back away from her
"Hatter have you gone totally insane?
My name is Greg not Johnny and I
wasn't watching your a*s at all.  I think
your beautiful without all that green make up on!

The Hatter's mouth opened and her eyes squinted
with teeth clinched as tight as possible she hissed
"You like her a*s better!  I saw you watching it
the other day over tea while she was on TV!"
Hatter stood up and kicked him in the chest
"D****t Johnny you love her a*s more than me!"
Hatter cried streaming green makeup into her hands

The prince called for his things before standing up
Hatter asked him where he was going
the prince didn't say anything until he reached the door

"For the last time my name is Greg and not Johnny
I think your a*s is just divine as golden wine
but Johnny and I have something in common
I too will take my chances with the Queen of Hearts
she may castrate me but at least she isn't crazy"

The prince stormed out the door and never returned
Hatter sat on the sofa and shock her head
"What the Frack!  did he just leave me for the queen too?
I knew he liked her red a*s more!"

Men are all the same
Hatter thought to herself before returning to the mirror
to count all her new wrinkles on her face

1,2 No 4! there's more!

I love this upside down crazy poem. Unfortunately many times women are like that and it is because society say being your and thin is what is acceptable for women. This was creatively done and I love how you made the hatter counter her wrinkles and call him Johnny when his name was Greg.

Ah, envy and insecurity, very insightful and wickedly twisted.

This is an extremely cutting and insightful poem about age, insecurity, vanity, and how these things may put us into a shell where we attack others and become very introverted and self-absorbed. It also shows us that these negative behaviors are ultimately resulting from fear and from rejection, which shows a sensitivity to the subject matter as well - we may become vain from self-hate, not from self-love. I thought that was an unusual and perceptive point of view to raise. This poem shows how our insecurities and vanities may come to us from another person - Johnny - and then go on to affect others in future also, in this case, Greg. All the energy is fundamentally linked together and we must embrace and address our insecurities and problems if we don't want them to affect others. We must also have realistic expectations of ourselves and of life, otherwise we are sure to be unhappy, and to fail to grasp happiness when it does come by us. This poem is almost uncomfortable to read in it's determination to reveal how we ultimately bring unhappiness onto ourselves as people, often while blaming others. I also think it is an important gender commentary on some of the worst weaknesses and failings of women, specifically, in relationships.
Finally, I read this poem a a nature reference, with the Mad Hatter, dressed all in green, representing our Earth, as it is now - somewhat decayed, somewhat despoiled, half crazy with memories of better days, trying to disguise the ravages of time and humanity, ageing, rejected, angry, and perhaps beyond saving by the handsome prince. Absolutely excellent writing, very intelligent and well thought out concept, very well executed, thought provoking and original content. Absolutely A1!

This one is my favorite of the Alice in Wonderland theme between Wonderland and Queen of Hearts. I believe it is because I can relate most to the Hatter. I like the clever spin of changing the gender of the Hatter into a girl, and how you linked the female perspective to the persona of maddness. It displays the message that girls often compare themselves to what they believe is beautiful instead of becoming aware of their beauty as she attempts to hide her imperfections with green paint. She is absorbed in the absurdity of her appearance instead of how her suitor reveals that she is beautiful, but she will still not believe so. I admit, I am a Hatter in a sense because of my critical attitude about myself although that has improved. Hatter is not only absurd with love, but she is with everything. She has the unique perspective of her reality; to her, she is surrounded by madness. Madness is truth. Truth is madness. We are all Hatters because we have a different perception:D

Now, enough of my analysis of the character. I would also like to add that I love the satirical approach to the theme. The Hatter is beautiful, but does not know it:D I love the Hatter:D She needs a Greg... Johnny, what is the difference:P haha

This was such a fun poem to read.. the idea of the Hatter being female delighted me.. This definitely depicts what society has turned all women into.. sitting, counting wrinkles and trying to cover them up while men only seem to become more interesting with each new wrinkle. Upside down society. Excellent write SW!

I really liked how you used all the green makeup as if she was covering herself in jealousy/envy, very effective. Perfect way to show how relationships full of paranoia, jealousy and self-deprecation never work, and ultimately destroy themselves. Love it.
