I Was Forever

I Was Forever

A Poem by Spoken

I Was Forever

I don’t know where I’m going but I know where I’ve been
in the arms a woman who told me I was forever
but she doesn’t smile anymore and these eyes refuse to cry for her
oh but now and then
tears wash over me and I’m soaking in the pouring rain
what do you want from me?
What can I give you that isn’t me?
Her wind is a fiery as she walks right past me
down the road of open dreams, where she knows I cannot follow.
Is this all that’s left of me?
A guitar and some broken strings
oil on my hands and faded jeans
like memories on a photograph she said
goodbye it’s time to go
but she left her scent on my pillow
and now I’m begging God please
take these pictures from my memory
I don’t want to dream in the colors of her hair
the feel of her skin
the sweet whispers in the night
don’t make me carry the words
I was forever
I was forever
How I wish I could forget
oh lord never again

I don’t know where I’m going but I know where I’ve been
In the arms of a woman who told me
I am forever
I was forever
I guess forever ends..

I hate to think that love does not last, but love lasts only as long as it does. It does not last a moment longer than it does, no matter what we may wish. What does appear to last that eternity, are the memories of that love. Who cannot close their eyes and remember being told that they were forever by somebody only to find that forever is not quite as long as it seems? If they cannot, they are damn lucky and should let that other person know every chance they get, just how forever they are to them as well. This piece has a certain casual rhythm to it, it does not hit you with a frying pan out of the blue - it weaves its way into your mind, taking you down that path where it is forever...

this is brilliant, with penetrating words straight from the damaged heart, some of the lines written here are stellar to say the least,
Her wind is a fiery as she walks right past me down the road of open dreams, where she knows I cannot follow.

but she left her scent on my pillow

I don't want to dream in the colors of her hair
the feel of her skin
the sweet whispers in the night

All these lines are tormenting, a great piece....Spoken

I don't know where I'm going but I know where I've been
In the arms of a woman who told me

Those lines alone are extremely powerful and gut wrenching... those questions can linger on when the one you love slips away without rhyme or reason. Emotional write.

"I was forever" wow...powerful words when heard from the lips of the right person; even more electrifying when you believe them with all your being. crushing blow to fall when time turns the page and they now ring false; upon the ears and the soul; breaking, the shards trickling down like rain upon the heart - each tiny cut feeling like the end; the words now a haunting refrain one carries within their now scarred heart..."I was forever". excellent write.
