I Was Forever

I Was Forever

A Poem by Spoken

I Was Forever

I don’t know where I’m going but I know where I’ve been
in the arms a woman who told me I was forever
but she doesn’t smile anymore and these eyes refuse to cry for her
oh but now and then
tears wash over me and I’m soaking in the pouring rain
what do you want from me?
What can I give you that isn’t me?
Her wind is a fiery as she walks right past me
down the road of open dreams, where she knows I cannot follow.
Is this all that’s left of me?
A guitar and some broken strings
oil on my hands and faded jeans
like memories on a photograph she said
goodbye it’s time to go
but she left her scent on my pillow
and now I’m begging God please
take these pictures from my memory
I don’t want to dream in the colors of her hair
the feel of her skin
the sweet whispers in the night
don’t make me carry the words
I was forever
I was forever
How I wish I could forget
oh lord never again

I don’t know where I’m going but I know where I’ve been
In the arms of a woman who told me
I am forever
I was forever
I guess forever ends..

I hate to think that love does not last, but love lasts only as long as it does. It does not last a moment longer than it does, no matter what we may wish. What does appear to last that eternity, are the memories of that love. Who cannot close their eyes and remember being told that they were forever by somebody only to find that forever is not quite as long as it seems? If they cannot, they are damn lucky and should let that other person know every chance they get, just how forever they are to them as well. This piece has a certain casual rhythm to it, it does not hit you with a frying pan out of the blue - it weaves its way into your mind, taking you down that path where it is forever...

gosh...I am in awe of this one. I read and re-read and it just gets better and better each time. This has an emptiness and ache that demands to be felt. Raw and vulnerable. LOVED IT! GREAT JOB!

This is such a poignant piece...very personal, and line after line of longing memories, meloncholy reflection, and sad, but stark realizations. Beautiful. Rain..

I think most people with any experience of having promises proken can relate to this one. A very powerful and emotional piece I definitely enjoyed. Nice write and beautifully conveyed.

Those words mirrored my feelings upon the breakup of my last relationship. An excellent piece.

Amazing piece.

I can't really say anything that hasn't been said about it before. Loved the imagery...one of the best poems I've read on this site.

I like you you didn't bother asking why. More often than not when such a punch comes towards us we don't ask why, we just want to numb it.

I thought this was a great poem in the sense that it spoke of true love and true loss and the confusion it leaves both in. you wrote it out excellent and it flows perfectly to the reader.

great job.

You have expressed such painful experiences that tug at the heartstrings.
When the question "Why" isn't answered it causes such powerful responses from within that we search for release from the ache inside.
I felt the strenght in your statement"I am forever," Because the forever love contained in you will start the healing process. Love to You ~ Jude xo
