Human WasteA Poem by SpokenWill we ever live to our potential?
nursing a cigarette after a drip of rain extinguishes it’s fire
searching every crevice of the car for nickels and dimes
barely making ends meet
but always finding ways to buy your fix
sacrificing gas money for a pack
just enough of both to get around
and get through
sneaking away to the bathroom
on a work day
like a defiant teenager
it mounts on the camel’s back
retaining stress like watery sacks
releasing qualms in a puff of smoke
washing worries away with something that
would gladly kill us if given the chance
booze and estranged women
illegal drugs and misguided inhibitions
unprotected sex and misdemeanor offenses
why do we indulge ourselves in such carelessness?
Dulling our minds, loosening our bodies
Stripping our potential
Laxing our morals to make a dollar
And all that will be left,
As we wonder why
we’ll never be remembered,
are the regrets and mistakes
Of a life well spent in waste
