The Mother Knows

A Chapter by Keirsten

“Ok, here you go.” Justin’s mom said as she put a plate in front of me. “Thank you. It looks really good.” I complimented. “Why thank you Lacie.” she said. I waited for Justin’s mom to sit down to start eating. We all talked about school and my accident…The front door opened and we all looked to see Justin’s dad. He was tall and looked really buff, but I was expecting that because Alex and him worked out every dad for surfing. He had brown eyes which was different from everyone else. Justin had such a strong resemblance to his dad.
“Hey, dad.” Justin said. “Hi, everyone. Lacie it’s nice to see you here.” he said. “Thank you, it’s nice to see you too.” I replied and started eating my fries after I finished my burger. “Mm, it smells good in here.” he said and walked over to Justin’s mom and kissed her. I’m pretty sure their names are Melissa and Jake. We all finished our meals and I helped Justin’s mom with the dishes. “Thank you so much for dinner.” I said as I dried the last dish and put it away. “Your welcome. Justin should be happy that he has a girlfriend like you.” she said.
How did she know? “G-Girlfriend?” I studdered. “I’m not oblivious to the world, Lacie. I can tell that you two are dating. It’s not a bad thing that the mother knows.” she said casually and I noticed that we were the only two in the kitchen. “Oh, ok.” I said quickly feeling a little bit embarrassed. She walked with me out of the kitchen to meet with Justin and Jake. They were sitting on the couch so Melissa sat in between them. I stood behind Justin and tapped his shoulder. He looked up at me and gave me a sweet smile.
“We’re going upstairs.” he said and walked up the steps into his room. “I’m going to call Cody and please try to be quiet and don’t distract me like you did when I talked to my mom.” I said and smiled at him. I had to put on a smile so he wouldn’t be worried. I was terrified to talk to Cody. I dialed Cody’s number slowly not wanting to hear his voice. “Hello Lacie.” his low voice said when he picked up and chills went down my spine. “We need to talk.” I started before he interrupted me. “I’d rather talk in person if you don’t mind. How about the California Café. Tomorrow at eleven, ok? I have to meet up with Kelsey at twelve. Oh and uh don’t bring you little boy toy with you” “W-What do you need to do with Kelsey?” I asked. “Something that you don’t need to know about.” he replied angrily and I got knots in my stomach. “Tomorrow at eleven, bye.” he said and then hung up.
“So?” Justin said eagerly. “Tomorrow at eleven in the California Café. He said to leave you here.” I said. “I have a really bad feeling about this Lace.” he said with fear in his voice. “It will be fine. What time is it?” I asked. “Almost nine. And you have until eleven-thirty.” he said. “Please stop worrying. Your going to be there. He just wont know it. Relax please?” I asked when I started to rub his shoulders to calm him down. “Do you want to go for a walk?” I asked. ”Yeah, sounds good. Through the door or window?” he asked sarcastically. “It depends. Do you sneak out of your house often?” I asked. “No, not really.” he replied and smiled. “Let’s go through the door then.” I said. “Ok.” and we walked down the steps.
“We’ll be back.” Justin yelled to his parents and we slid out of the door. “It’s beautiful outside.” I said. “Yeah it is.” Justin agreed. “So where will you be tomorrow when I go to talk to Cody?” I asked. “I’ll stand on the side of the building where there are no big windows.” he suggested. “How will you know what’s going on then?” I asked. “I can listen. Just make sure that you get a seat next to the wall. I wont let him hurt you.” he promised. “Ok.” I agreed. We walked slowly towards the beach and talked about our last year in high school. We decided to take a road trip to New York during senior week and see Rent on broad way. He then took me home around eleven and he kissed me goodbye before I walked through the front door.
