The Party/Proposal

The Party/Proposal

A Chapter by Keirsten

A lot of Lacie’s friends and family piled into the small entrance and made their way to the living room and kitchen greeting each other casually. I said hello to everybody as they walked through the door. Most of them I knew except for the occasional family member that I haven’t met before.

I turned on some music that everybody would like after I was finished welcoming everybody. I walked over to a group of friends of mine and noticed one of the guys at school that I hated with a passion. Cody Chanler. He is the most stuck up player on the football team, but that’s only one of the great characteristics that I hate so much. The reason why I hate him the most is because during lunch before school got out, Lacie told me that she had a huge crush on him. I know its so selfish, but it works for me. He doesn’t like me that much either, so it all evens out.

He glanced at me through the crowd and started to make him way toward me. He then looked at me with an “I’m too good for any of these people” expression on his face. I wanted to punch it right off of him. “Hey Justin, how’s your girlfriend?” he asked sarcastically then let out a chuckle under his breath. “She’s not my girlfriend and you know that.” I replied protectively. “Well it sure looks like she is seeming as how you’re the one with the brilliant idea to throw this welcome home party for her and I heard that you two are practically glue to each other,” he argued smugly trying to sound like he knows all. I should just knock him out right now.

“We are best friends and where did you hear that from?” I asked trying to resist from punching him in the face. “Kelsey,” Figures, why didn’t I see that coming? “ she talks about how you two are at the beach alone together all the time, leave her left out all the time. What kind of friend does that, huh? Just let the truth come out already. Everyone knew it was bound to happen.” he argued again. “Well, your wrong.” I replied and walked away before I exploded and caused a scene.

He just loved to make me angry. The sad thing is that it works every time. The phone then rang and I turned the music off and told everyone to be quiet so that Lacie wouldn’t hear it if it was her on the phone. Keith picked up the phone and he said “Hello…Ok…So she’s good?…Your coming home right now?…Two minutes, ok…I love you too, bye.” and he hung up. “Two minutes everyone.” he yelled and I turned off the lights and everyone scattered around the bottom floor of the house to find a hiding spot. I was behind the couch and I could see Cody hiding under the dining room table with his hands at the ready on the chair in front of him so he could jump out easily. He looked at me and it seemed like a competition to him…Who could jump out faster. He is so pathetic.

About a minute later I heard keys jingle outside the door and there was tension and excitement in the air. The door then opened and Lacie along with her mother walked into the dark house. Lacie walked into the dining room and threw a bag that looked heavy right into the chair and on top of Cody’s fingers. He whispered “Ouch!” and I let out a laugh. The lights went on and everyone jumped out from their hiding stops yelling “SURPRISE!” I walked over to her and was the first one to get a hug. She had a surprised look on her face which was exactly what we were aiming for. “What is all this for?” she asked with a huge smile on her beautiful face. “You came home from the hospital. Everyone is happy that your ok.” I explained to her. She broke from our embrace and kissed me on my cheek. My face got hot and I could tell that I was slightly blushing.

I glanced over at Cody and saw that he was trying to shake the pain off of his hand and I laughed again but harder. Lacie then walked over to her mother who was with Keith and hugged them both. Once she escaped from their embrace she turned around and her eyes got wide and a smile appeared on her face. “Oh my God, Cody!” she yelled across the room when she saw that jerk. I instantly got jealous when she hugged him tightly. Tighter than she hugged me. I think that she still likes him and I cant do anything about it. She thanked him for coming and they talked for a little bit then she went on to hug the next person who was surrounding her. Surprisingly, I never once heard anyone at the party speak of the bandage on her head.

Cody then started walking towards me with a smug look in his face. “I knew it. She mostly told everyone that you two were dating from that kiss she gave you.” he said speaking like he were king of the world and he knew everything. “Your still wrong Cody, now go start drama with someone else.” I replied defensively. “Whatever, if your not dating her, then I’ll ask her out.” he said and walked away. Yeah, I screwed that one up. “Everyone, may I have your attention, please?” Keith started trying to hush everybody. “This is a party in honor of Lacie’s recovery from a bad surfing accident. We are all glad to have her here and healthy. We love you Lacie.” he said and everyone started clapping. “If you only knew.” I mumbled quietly to myself.

“Wait, I have one more announcement.” he started. He walked over to Lacie’s mom and pulled a small black case from his shirt pocket then got on one knee. “Lizzy, I love you with all of my heart and I never want that to go away.” Tears started to roll down her face.” Will you marry me, Elizabeth Lynn Barron?” he asked opening the small case revealing a gold ring with extraordinary diamonds on it. Miss Barron put one hand on her mouth when she saw the ring. “Yes!” she finally said letting Keith put the ring onto her finger. They both stood up and kissed each other passionately while the audience clapped and cheered for the. Lacie on the other hand remained sitting down in a chair looking as if nothing had just happened. I decided to see what was going on so I walked over to her. “Hey are you ok?” I asked. “Um, I don’t know…Cody just kissed me.” she replied in a flat, but surprised voice. Her face was blank and I couldn’t tell if it was a good or bad thing. I glared at Cody who was smiling widely in the opposite corner from me staring at Lacie.
