Masks

Masks

A Poem by SpitfireGrrrl

where do you put your masks?
do you keep them in pockets
in a jacket big enough to
envelope them and keep them close?

i am struggling with mine
too many to count
too many to keep
i can only wear one
at a time

if i get that jacket, and i wear it
all the time, everywhere
the mask you need me to wear
will always be close...

i can change them out
be who you need me to be
at a moments notice
no matter who's asking

if i get that jacket though
and wear it
all the time, everywhere
i fear it will swallow me
whole

or the masks will get mixed up
overlapping my countenance
merging into something
i don't have the strength
to be, all the time, everywhere.

so please, tell me
where do you put your masks
to keep you safe?

:: a very powerful piece of writing... i've really struggled with the idea of being good enough for somebody... only to realize that i am a caterpillar who wants to be my own kinda flutterby...

Thank you :) Being your own kind of flutterby is best!

:: yeah... and you're welcome... :)
You ask a very real and not rhetorical at all ...question.

I like the flow and way you "grow" the content.

The second stanza - why do you use "them"? My sense was of you speaking of your own.

Thank you! Hrm... them as in the masks themselves. Perhaps "mine" would work better?

"mine" really fits well with what you are saying... good choice.
