Chapter 5 of Completed

Eiko and Rie walked together to the classroom and sat down in their seats. Eiko lay her right elbow on her desk. Her cheek leaned into the palm of her hand. She looks out the window and thought about what Hajime said yesterday. She repeated what he said into her head, “Even if you don’t like him, at least try to understand his situation. Maybe he’s not as bad as you think.” Flashbacks of Hiroyuki teasing her and occasional video game fights played through her mind. After contemplating for a bit, she realized that she never once had an actual one on one conversation with Hiroyuki.

Eiko said to herself, “Oh, no wonder why I could never 

understand him. Because I never had a good talk with him 

before. I never tried to understand him. Maybe what Hajime said 

yesterday was right. I need to have a genuine conversation with 

him.” Rie notices her spacing out and being deep in thought. She 

tries to get Eiko’s attention. She called her name a couple of 

times. Eiko didn’t respond until she tapped her shoulder. Eiko

flinched and looked at Rie. Rie said, “Finally, you’re responding 

to me! I thought you were ignoring me.”Eiko said, “Oh.. sorry! I 

was deep in thought.” Rie said, “I can tell. What were you 

thinking about?” She replied back, “Ah nothing much. Just 

thinking I need to communicate better to a certain somebody for 

once.” Rie looked confused and said, “What’s that supposed to 

mean?"

The bell rang and the homeroom teacher started to call for 

attendance. Eiko looked at Hiroyuki’s desk and saw his seat was 

empty. She wondered if he was going to come to school today. 

The homeroom called Hiroyuki’s name and noticed he was 

absent. Before the homeroom teacher marked him absent, 

Hiroyuki opened the door. He apologized for his tardiness and sat 

in his seat. Eiko stared at Hiroyuki and wondered when it will be a

good time to talk?

It was finally lunchtime. Eiko was going to approach him. Then a bunch of girls came rushing in the classroom to have lunch with him. A few classes later, they had a little break. She head out the halls and she saw him walking to her direction. She was going to call his name but he was surrounded again by girls and some guys. Eiko started to become a bit frustrated and yelled, “Why is he so damn popular?!! It makes it harder for me to approach him!” She grunted and stomped back to class. It was the last period. Last period was gym.

Eiko and Rie went to the locker room and got changed. They 

went outside for gym. The gym teacher instructed them to play 

soccer with the other class. Boys and girls were separated to 

different fields. After an hour of playing soccer, the gym teacher 

told Eiko to put away the soccer equipment. Eiko nodded and 

carried a few soccer balls to the storage shed. Hiroyuki came out 

of the shed and wiped some of his sweat with his left arm.

Eiko and Hiroyuki noticed one another. As Eiko was putting the 

soccer balls away, she asked, “Oh? Are you done with putting 

back the gym equipment?” Hiroyuki shook his head and replied, 

“Not yet.” Eiko got out of the shed and said, “Then let’s help one 

another. It would get the job done faster.” He looked at Eiko and

smirked. He said smugly, “Well aren’t you being nice to me for 

the first time?” Eiko stick her pointer finger at him and yelled, 

“If you don’t want to accept this rare chance of me being nice 

for once, then you can pick up the rest of the gym equipment 

yourself!” Hiroyuki was a bit surprised by her response and 

laughed a bit. He said, “That’s true. Then I will take up on your 

offer!”

They picked up all the gym equipment together and Hiroyuki 

locked the shed. Eiko got two bottles of water.She throws one at 

him and said, “Hey! Catch!” He catches the bottle with one hand. 

They sat down on a bench near the soccer field. They both drank 

their water. A cool breeze blew through their hair. Eiko stares the

sky. Hiroyuki stares at Eiko’s hair flowing in the wind. He said in a 

calm voice, “This is the first time that we actually spend a bit of time 

together.”  Eiko nods and said, “I noticed that we never had a one 

and one conversation before. Today, let’s change that and have our 

first genuine conversation.” She looks into his eyes

while saying those words.

Hiroyuki’s eyes start to light up and his mouth slowly forms a smile. He said, “ You know, Today has been the nicest thing that happened to me all week. Thank you Eiko.” Eiko smiles and said, “You’re welcome”.
